It happens all the time, all over the country. Usually it happens sooner in the process (like with Chuck Baker) so they have a chance to find a landing spot. I'm not making excuses. Still a shitty thing to do.

I'm not sure why the cost and TOPS always come up when discussing greyshirts. Most of the time they don't take any classes until the Spring anyway, and if they do enroll in the Fall it is only part time.

That does seem to be the way it plays out but I've read many times that it is advantageous to greyshirt local kids because of TOPS - or because they have the financial wherewithal (family $) to carry them thru in order to free up a slot.

Help me out. Is the decision for a grayshirt to enroll in fall classes: Pro Walk on to the team and get coaching and weight training. Con Starts eligibility clock and leaves you with only 4 to play 4, instead of 5 to play 4 if one waits until the spring. ETA: obviously aside from financial considerations and the fact that one will graduate sooner and the question of what one does for a semester of sitting out.

Since you asked me I will try to answer. I think we are both right. For some of the highly coveted kids, yes, its a business. Take your visits, ride the recruiting roller coaster, get your offers, make your pick. Usually at the last minute. But this kid committed to LSU, his dream school, way early in the process. Like as a junior. Other schools stopped recruiting him. He was set. It was not a business decision for him. He missed the whole recruiting process. He was LSU all in. Then late in the game they pull his scholly. So yeah. For most of the Rivals top 50 or 100 or wherever you want to draw the line--kids destined for the NFL--recruiting is a business just like it is for the program. But don't lump this kid in with that group. Not the same. And I'm not judging the school or the kid. JMO

Technically they didn't. He gets a FULL scholarship, but one semester late. Lots of of solid recruits don't even get a preferred walk on spot.

The staff also gave Duke Riley a scholly after Lawson was asked to grey-shirt. We are now 4-deep at LB.

So when will we know if he accepted it or not? Haven't read all three pages of the thread.

lawson vs. riley. thats the part I don't get. why would staff pull schollie from lawson to give riley. thats how it worked out. must be some reasoning behind it if only riley helps with 2014 curtis kids. lb was not a position anyone suspected to take 3 spots.

Agreed. I don't know how many kids I've heard this year talking about going to the pros in 3 years including Nkemdiche. This is the main reason they go through this. Didn't Jeremy Hill greyshirt and then get the starting position by the end of his first season? Next, year will be a great need for defensive tackles just like defensive ends this year. So what's so horrible about a greyshirt if you only have to pay for one semester and you can still go pro in two years? Is it a pride thing. Did Hill just have patience? If Trindon greyshirted, did he just have more patience? Pride certainly can cloud judgement. I can't sympathize because kids accepting entry into West Point have to do a year of prep school anyway before they will officially be able to enter the West Point program. If TCU has a better staff that can offer him the best chance to get to the NFL, then so be it. Just make sure that's the reason for going there.

The only con of a grey shirt is that the player has to pay his own way his 1st semester at school. His eligibility doesn't start for a full year after it would have with a normal offer. If you happen to be injured and expect no chance of even practicing your 1st semester at school......you NEED to take a greyshirt. It only helps you, otherwise you would have wasted your redshirt without even being able to practice. When you are on greyshirt....you are not part of the team so you don't go to practice and training and all that. But you can use that time to heal or train outside school.

I really don't think Lawson is looking at college as a jump to the NFL in 2 years. It's not as much as a pride thing as it is finding a place to feel wanted, call home for 4-5 years and get an education.

I agree with this. My nephew, who is enrolled at West Point, still struggled with the idea of doing one year of prep school. It wasn't exactly the way he wanted it, but he now has no regrets about it.

If I was him I would just take the grey shirt. LSU has a lot more to offer than those other schools. Yeah its messed up but at the end of the day he still will get more exposure at LSU.

I'm fairly sure that this isn't true. An athlete's eligibility clock starts upon enrollment, regardless of who is paying for school.

This is true if he is enrolled full time. If he is enrolled part time, it doesn't start. A grey shirt is simply an athlete who delays full time erollment until the spring and gets his scholarship then. There's no need to enroll prior to that point, so if he can't afford it, or whatever, he doesn't have to go part time.

This. Most grey shirts only take 9 hours their 1st semester. Otherwise, they lose the major benefit of greyshirting (delaying their eligibility clock). You go full time student (on scholarship in Jan. instead of Aug.), and then have 5 years to play 4 (instead of 4 to play 4 if you redshirt). Huge advantage to borderline SEC worthy players and injured players. Plus, you allow your team to sign more people your initial year.

LSU didn't want to take the risk for a player like Lawson. It's that simple. When a kid is not qualified, it is a tenuous situation. It sounds like the kid did everything he could from the end of his junior year on. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough all things considered. Pride is a funny thing. Even in this thread you have posters swearing that there was no risk and that LSU dropped Lawson for a higher ranked player. The truth is that LSU didn't drop Lawson...it only asked him to wait a semester so that LSU could ensure that he was qualified. And, LSU didn't replace him with a high ranked player...they replaced his spot with a last minute offer to a guy who was a marginal offer for a long time. Those people won't acknowledge that truth because then their hurt pride and anger is no longer justified.
