Pop Warner football would get blitzed out of New York if a Bronx lawmaker gets his way. Assemblyman Michael Benedetto has introduced legislation to prohibit children younger than 11 from playing organized tackle football anywhere in the state. It apparently is the first such proposal in the nation. “I want to protect the children,” Benedetto, a Democrat, told the Daily News on Friday. “I want them to get an appreciation of the game but I also don’t want them to come out of this wonderful sport in a damaged condition.”

Is it really possible for 8 year olds to tackle with enough force to do any real damage? Seriously?

I used to coach at the 3-6th grade level when my sons were growing up. The greatest dangers to the children are the unrealistic expectations put on them by parents trying to live through them vicariously. And that statement by Benedetto is just a bunch of self-serving fluff. New York fast becoming California East.

We start playing tackle from 8 all the way to 12 years of age. Over the last 3 years we have averaged 52 teams a year that played tackle, playing an average of 7 games each season. That comes out to an average of 364 games a year and 1.092 games in 3 seasons. We have had a total of 0 head injuries. Can it happen? Yes. Will it happen? Eventually I'm sure it will. I truly believe it all depends on how you train your coaches and kids and what type of resources you make available for them. To do away with it is going too far. In fact I've had more kids injured in flag than tackle by a long shot(not head injuries)

I've seen 2 in 25 years at WOYSA in WM. Both were from bad form and it wasn't helmet to helmet. Weight limits for players to be able to play as well as being able to carry the ball really helps keep the injuries to a minimum.

I believe that they shouldn't play tackle until 7th grade. And then they should all play rugby.

This: I love football, but Rugby is a superior sport. 1 To a poster upthread: It's not so much the risk of catastrophic injury as the cumulative effect that mainifests itself years down the road. Some researchers say children and adolescent brains are more susceptible to this type of damage. 2 Football is unlike baseball, golf, etc in that fine motor skills are less of a factor, and those that are don't apply to blocking and tackling. By the time he gets to high school, a kid who starts playing tackle football at age 8 has little, if any, skill advantage over a kid who starts playing in middle school. You can learn to block and tackle in a few months. It's not like learning to hit a curve ball. I played HS football with several guys who went on to college ball. Two of them made it to the NFL. All of them started playing in 7th grade. The delay didn't hinder them one bit. The responses on this thread are predictable, but this isn't much of a big deal. Kids that age oughtn't be playing organized sports anyway, IYAM. They should be playing pickup games in the front yard. Organized sports leagues, and especially things like travel ball, are mostly about the parents ego.

Silly idea. If you tackle properly, you're not going to have all the brain trauma that has everyone worried. Players just need to wrap up instead of trying to obliterate people.

To add to this, Mingo didn't play until his junior year of high school. Pretty sure he's going to be a top 15 pick in a couple of months.

Correct. One of the things I found most challenging was the short attention span of the kids. They are easily distracted and don't always understand the need to be alert to the action around them. Easy for them to get hurt just by not paying attention.
