I'm fine with this because honestly there wasn't much out there. Other than taking a chance on a position coach who'd never been a DC before or an overrated college DC, we chose someone who has experience, a personality you know the players will respond to, and someone who knows how to run a 3-4. Clearly, after all interviews he was the best man for the job and I'm okay with that.
I do think Payton will keep his antics and mouth in check, and in curious to see him coach a D with a great O and a first rate organization (his previous three stops were messes).
I was super excited to get Spags, and I'm lukewarm on this hire. Looking to be pleasantly surprised.
