The New Orleans Music Thread

I'd like to start up a conversation about our favorite New Orleans songs and artists, as few cities have the rich culture and music history of New Orleans Louisiana!

Since it's Mardi Gras season, I'll start it off with a NOLA classic, Who Shot the LaLa by Oliver Morgan.

Oliver Morgan - Who Shot The Lala

From Home Of The Groove Blog:

As sung by raspy-voiced Oliver Morgan, who claims that he actually wrote the song but allowed producer/arranger Eddie Bo to take the credit, “Who Shot The LaLa” tells a tale based on the real-life death and possible murder of singer Lawrence “Prince La La” Nelson in 1963. Morgan grew up in the same Ninth Ward neighborhood in New Orleans and started out on the same record label, AFO, as “La La”, whose big brother was Walter “Papoose” Nelson, the legendary guitarist. The lyrics say that “La La” was shot. The singer is not sure who shot him; but, he says, “I know it was a .44”, referring to the weapon’s caliber. Actually, the younger Nelson died of an alleged drug overdose, which some say was injected in him by another. So, he was shot, but in a different way. Morgan makes sure you don’t think he did it, then names the possible suspects and advises what should be done to the guilty party, if caught. The strange thing is, despite the grim subject, the song has the tone of a party record.

THE METERS - HEY POCKY A-WAY

George Porter Jr came to our office last year and spent the day talking about The Meters and NOLA music. One of the coolest guys on planet earth and was one of the best days ever ;)

Song Meaning?:

"Hey, Pocky Way" is the most famous of the Mardi Gras Indian songs, but its correct title is "Too Way Pa-Ka-Way." The meaning is obscure, but some language experts suggest that it sounds like toi pas kwe. In Creole French this means "you can't believe that." There are other experts who claim that "two way" is a corruption of the French tuer, and that the phrase means "kill the guy over there."

The fact is that the songs and chants of the Indian tribes are a complicated mixture of African, Indian, Creole French and English words and no one is really sure what they mean.

As they were setting up the halftime stage. I was shocked. In all my years as a Saints ticket holder and other miscellaneous events I've never heard it there.

The Meters are funks originators...Funk masters

Check out Neville Brothers "Voodoo" off their Live on planet earth album

Also, Dumpstaphunk will be right up your alley if you like Meters.

Old school Galactic is heavily influenced by the Meters, but Galactic's new stuff is on another level too
