So I just watched the entire season of Firefly and want to know if the movie Serenity picks up where the series left off? They didn't even get to show who the Shepard really was or what actually happened to River? WTF

Serenity answers some questions but a lot is left unknown.

It's a Dark Comic about Shepherd Book, that's the wiki, you can purchase it in many places.
You can find out who Book is from that link though.

We also know inara's story as well, it was given to us recently in the 10th year anniversary series on TV.

Yeah, you need to watch it and then to polish it all off you need to see the bonus material that went with the show/movie. Some of that is as good or even better than all of it. The how they made it, the interviews with the cast about it, ect., even the bloopers, yeah.

Ok #1, go up 4 post to my post and link with "A Shepherd's Tale" that is a graphic novel about Shepherd Book. (ETA: This graphic novel will tell you 100% what Shepherd Book was)
#2, sometime in mid-2012 there was a video that came out from comic-con for the 10th year anniversary of firefly, in it they asked questions about Firefly, and the writers admitted some secrets they had never told.. the biggest of them - was what was up with inara.

That q&a is something awesome just to sit down and watch sometime in the future, it's nice to see where everyone is, what they are doing, how they felt about firefly etc. It's a very good fan favorite type thing.
As for Inara, she was sick, like, going to die and there was nothing they could do about it sick, hence the comments such as:
"I just want to live"
