Student-led prayers are conducted over the PA system during 1st period every day at my school.
If it is a public school, it should be stopped, IMO.

For frick's sake. Is this really the biggest issue that Mississippi's educational system is facing?
If it tells you anything about the state, it's one of the biggest issues that the state cares about (it means they..i mean "we" since its my state..are some backwoods fricks)

it will be interesting when the Satanist insist they be allowed to pray in school, or the Radical Islamist, or Hindus then you will see true 'religion' (aka hypocritical bullshite) come out in the local population.

Kinda funny when you eliminated prayer in schools and then there is a shooting in a school, who is the first person your call on-----God and prayer. Little late maybe?

The cops? Are you suggesting your god is so vengeful that he'd kill innocent kids as an example? Just because state sanctioned organized prayer didn't occur?

The Mississippi House just passed Prayer in Schools Could be interesting to watch on a national level.
This brings to mind an interesting question. Are you againts this because it violates your 1st amendment rights or are you for the State making its own laws free of big gov't oversight.

This is what I found on the subject via google. Don't know how accurate it is.
quote:
Senate bill 2633 passed the senate education committee unanimously this morning. The measure gives students the right to pray in the classroom or talk openly about religion in a class assignment.
If that is an accurate reflection of the bill, then I see nothing wrong with it and frankly, wonder why the bill is necessary? Is it the Fed's position that the it is currently illegal to do the things the bill addresses?

As long as there is a Mississippi, the rest of the country will always wonder what the bottom truly feels like. Is it God before Guns? Or...Guns before God? Southern religious whackos always entertain

JACKSON, Miss. (KNOE 8 News & AP) - State lawmakers are advancing a measure meant to make it legal for students to pray before public school groups. House Bill 1112, sponsored by Rep. Mark Formby, a Picayune Republican, was approved unanimously Monday by the House Education Committee. It suggests naming events including morning announcements, football games and graduations as "limited public forums" choosing students to speak at each. The bill says schools can't punish students who pray, and sponsors say the aim is to promote such prayer. The bill bans teachers from penalizing students for expressing religious views in schoolwork. It requires allowing students to organize prayer groups and religious clubs and allowing outside religious groups to use school facilities in the same way as nonreligious groups. The bill goes to the House for more debate.
Mississippi House Education Committee OK's school prayer bill I see absolutely nothing in here that could constitute an endorsement or mandate, just embracing religious freedom protected in the first amendment. Nothing more than not prohibiting the free exercise thereof of religion.

Yeah. So far, all I'm seeing is language that prohibits STOPPING a student who simply chooses to speak about religion or pray at some event. Now, if there's more to it, I'll happily look, but at this point, IDGAF.

I hope Mississippi is successful in this endeavor and it bleeds into a national trend. We are n dire need of a turnaround. I'll guarantee this is why Robert Nkemdeche signed with Ole Miss

If they are just allowing prayer in school and not forcing it, I'm fine with that.
