Blacks and Hispanics waited twice as long in line to vote on average than Whites

quote:

A Massachusetts Institute of Technology analysis determined that blacks and Hispanics waited nearly twice as long in line to vote on average than whites. Florida had the nation’s longest lines, at 45 minutes, followed by the District of Columbia, Maryland, South Carolina and Virginia, according to Charles Stewart III, the political science professor who conducted the analysis.

quote:

Several recent polls and studies suggest that long waiting times in some places depressed turnout in 2012 and that lines were longest in cities, where Democrats outnumber Republicans.

quote:

A separate analysis, by an Ohio State University professor and The Orlando Sentinel, concluded that more than 200,000 voters in Florida “gave up in frustration” without voting.

“When I got there, the line was around the building,” said Jonathan Piccolo, 33, who said he had waited nearly eight hours to cast a ballot in Miami-Dade County the Monday before Election Day.

Is this because some people read slower and have harder times following directions....or is it a conspiracy?

Only one of which was won by Romney.

My research has shown they also take twice as much time at ATM machines.

Sounds like education level could be a confounding factor if I want to give it the biased eyeball test.

However, I feel that you need to look at quality of polling staff, type of equipment used, and number of polling stations per capita.

It takes longer because they have more dead people voting.

I'd estimate they take 5-10x longer than whites at Redbox, so overall they're killing it at the voting booth.

I was coming to type three times longer but I'll be generous and go with twice as long.

Obviously there are a lot less places to early vote in pre voting than on election day. Also, doesn't everyone basically vote in the same place for pre voting?

This does not concern me unless they have separate lines for the different races.

You ever wind up behind 4 black people at the convenience store?

Seriously

I always found it funny that they'd have the elections in November....Northern States didn't complain?

Blacks and Hispanics typically live in more urban areas, so they're going to end up waiting in longer lines. That's probably a lot of the difference right there.

Wasn't Dade county the one where folks had trouble figuring out how to fill out the ballots in 2000? All that "hanging chads" BS?
