How much are you wanting to spend?

Exactly! I am confused because the OP clearly stated he wanted a semi-auto and the first reply was an 870 assault rapid fire youth model.

We've had good luck with a Winchester Ranger, Youth model in 20 gauge. It would serve, in a pinch, as a ladies defense gun. Recoil is very manageable and it is probably a little nicer than the Mossberg without breaking the bank. (ETA: Sorry - this is a pump action as well, though I still recommend it.)

I really like those Silver's for myself. I hate to have to jack my kids gun every now and then to use myself though haha

LINK I bought this for my daughter a few years ago, it's been a great gun but the recoil with 3" is pretty stout. When she was 10 yrs old she would shoot 2 boxes at skeet and want to keep shooting.(7/8 0z loads) ETA: I paid $599 for it, I didn't see a price in the link.

An o/u is not a great gun for a young girl they kick as much as a pump. I have a 20 ga beretta that I have a spare butt stock cut as a youth model. It nice and safe because it is a crack barrel and my son shot it when he was younger (he is well over 6’ now so he has moved on) but it does kick. Silvers are a pretty gun but go w a youth model auto (esp a gas gun) and she will enjoy it a lot more.

I shoot a silver on dove and quail hunts and I love it. I shot a Cordoba a few weeks ago and it kicks like a donkey, it's very, very light. For your price range and why you're buying the gun, Silver is as good as you're going to get. In my totally biased opinion.

I got my daughter the Tri Star youth 20. I tried the pump, but it was too much recoil for her. She shots this thing with ease now. I use it chasing rabbits and its a killing machine.

I would do my best to find a Beretta A390 in 20. Should be able to find one in the $400-600 range.

Remington makes an 870 Youth Compact. It is about 4 inches shorter than the regular youth model. It fits my 9 year old good.

My uncle gave me his Browning 20ga semi auto to use when I was younger. Sweet little shotgun. He is giving it to his grandson though, I tried to buy it from him, but to no avail.

I may possibly be mistaken but I do believe that is a pump shotgun which he specifically said he did not want.
