I don't think RP (being a service man himself) appreciated Chris Kyle's public expressions of his life as a sniper. From his vantage point he probably saw it as gloating.
I suppose that's not an invalid line of reasoning. The whole "live by the sword" line makes his point come across as a bit trite, if you ask me, though.

didn't you know that defending innocent people against evil is considered 'living by the sword'?

To the more politically experienced (educated) sure. Maybe RP was trying to reach a different audience? Awww shite...no he wasn't. I'm reading too much into it.

See that's where your reading comprehension skills need work!

Nice spin but my reading comprehension has nothing to do with this. The last time I read this board days ago I saw the die by a sword comment about the Navy SEAL dying and this person was told to DIAF. Care to post a link to anything differently? Your hypocrisy twist is not working.

Perhaps, he simply referenced "live by the sword" to the fact that he was at a shooting range. I am NOT suggesting that is wrong. But, everyone seems to think his 'by the sword' refers to his service. And, maybe Paul means the GOVERNMENT entanglements in foreign wars...and this man's death is symbolic of the Gov program dying by the sword....etc. His statement could be much more nuanced than the common translation.

I think ron paul's comment is disgusting, just as I thought yours was. Interesting to see you got so riled up over it, though.

Ehh, it's a poor choice of a line to try to make a nuanced point. It doesn't come across well. And this is coming from someone who has no real strong feelings one way or another about Ron Paul or this sniper guy.

I really think it's this. I would bet $20 bucks that if RP clarifies his comment in the coming days that this is the explanation he will give. He always talks about this issue when it comes to foreign policy and how it directly affects the lives of our servicemen.

Mmk. Not even sure you know what you are talking about now. DAYS ago I posted, this comment LINK You said, i was 'parroting Ron Paul'. No, I spoke my mind, a day before Ron Paul spoke his. And i caught hell for it, like I knew I would. There is no spin. The guy died by a gun, after writing a book about killing people by guns. Correct me if I am wrong, is this an autobiography, or is this mostly about his 100+ confirmed kills? Seems to me his life was killing people, and his claim to fame was killing people. Seems to me his life was the sword. He certainly did not choose to write about flowers, piano lessons, or any of his real passions did he? Nope, he had a book about killing people, at the center of his life. He lived by the sword. Was that broken down enough for you? I cant break it up into too many more pieces than that.

correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the line 'those who live by the sword, will die by the sword' refer to the law of reaping what you have sown in the context of murder? Couldn't it be also stated that: those who murder will die as such? And thus the proper conclusion has to be that Paul is calling Kyle a murderer, and perhaps insinuating that all soldiers are murderers? I suppose Paul just says whats on his mind.

I'm not riled up about it bro, definitely not. But I am glad to see you are not a hypocrite about this, and i respect that. if you find RP's comments just as offensive as mine, I respect that. Sorry you feel that way. My point is that, if President Obama had said RP's comments, you would not have seen the responses to the first page of this thread that you saw. People take sides not based on their principles anymore, but on party affiliation.

I wish Hagel had been more like him when he went before the Senate last week, though it would have probably doomed his chances of getting confirmed if he did.

I somewhat disagree. The axiom may have ORIGINATED in that context, but it now is used to cover any action that "comes back to haunt you"...Hell, they use it in football broadcasts. I actually took his comment to mean "live by the gun, die by the gun".
