IP is absolutely not legitimate property. You may think that recognizing IP is beneficial but it takes vast leaps in logic to recognize it as actual property.

but you didn't design the chair to sit in, you designed it to solve a problem, and you should have the opportunity to consider that your property for some period of time, if it is truly unique.

those represent greatly enhanced accessibility and as you say, stability, i'm not discounting their usefulness. but they do not represent innovation in the sense of making something that has not been seen before- something risky. that's where ip can help make it worth your while

Who cares? I just read the Wikipedia summary if criticisms of IP and am not convinced. This kind of shite is laughable:quote:
[I]magine the time when men lived in caves. One bright guy—let's call him Galt-Magnon—decides to build a log cabin on an open field, near his crops. To be sure, this is a good idea, and others notice it. They naturally imitate Galt-Magnon, and they start building their own cabins. But the first man to invent a house, according to IP advocates, would have a right to prevent others from building houses on their own land, with their own logs, or to charge them a fee if they do build houses. It is plain that the innovator in these examples becomes a partial owner of the tangible property (e.g., land and logs) of others, due not to first occupation and use of that property (for it is already owned), but due to his coming up with an idea. Clearly, this rule flies in the face of the first-user homesteading rule, arbitrarily and groundlessly overriding the very homesteading rule that is at the foundation of all property rights.[42]
That's simply not the same as an author owning his creation. I couldn't care less about the music industry, but this anti-IP thing comes off as people just wanting something for nothing.

We're going to get it regardless of whether you think IP exists or not. So adapt to society changing, because it isn't reverting.

So joshnorris should be allowed to duplicate the latest movie releases, sell them to theaters, undercut the studios, and tell the creators to F/O?

who can free-ride off of your massive initial investment of time & research. this makes that initial expenditure much less likely

As long as I didn't enter into a contract that forbade me from doing that with the person I received the movie from.

The concepts of patents are so convoluted. You only have IP over an idea for a specific, arbitrary period of time? That makes absolutely no sense.

it represents a weighing of costs & benefits it may be crude and far from efficient, but it absolutely makes sense

Is that before or after the anarchy you seek? And reverts to what? A time when people respected others?

We live in a near-constant state of anarchy. The degradation of IP will only lead living in an even closer to constant state of anarchy.

When was the last time you got free legal advice? How about a free doctor's office visit? Both consist almost entirely of passing their learned knowledge to you. This idea that people don't own their knowledge is simply ridiculous and frankly beneath some of you that I usually respect on this board.

Your questions are irrelevant. People can make money off of expertise. That doesn't mean that if they tell me what the symptoms to scabies are that I can't then give that knowledge to others. They don't own the knowledge.

OK. Thoroughly simpleton, but as long as your theft is petty your change of getting caught is probably low. Pirate a copy of the newest movie and sell tickets to see it at your place, well that's no longer petty. IP is highly relevant. It is, has been, will be. Period.
