I joke and kid about being a chauvinist all the time.
(NoHo, more sammichs! )

The fact is, there is a lot more to marriage that just being "the boss."
You are taking on a tremoudus responsibility in being the head of the household. It is best to be married to someone that shares the same values and beliefs as you do.

Any man that treats his wife like a possession is clueless. And he's missing the real value of a marriage.

Well, we disagree, obviously.

If you were inferring that I think of her as a possession, you are incorrect.

My point is that if we had those types of fundamental differences, we wouldn't be discussing marriage anyway.

My wife asked me if I wanted her to take my name, I told her do you want me to introduce you as my wife or babys mamma.

The "macho caveman males" on here amaze me. You expect women to take your name even if they don't want to? If women asked you to take their name, would you? If not, then you are a hypocrite. You can't "demand" that they take your name if you wouldn't be willing to do the same for them. It's just a name and if women aren't comfortable taking yours, let them keep theirs, go with a hyphenated name, or choose a new last name. There is no woman who should marry a man who demands that they take their name. If a man is that close minded, he would start demanding other things as well. Marriage is a partnership, not a dictatorship.

Who decides which one is the "head of the household?" Is it the man or the woman? Why is there a need for one? A marriage isn't a corporation, it's a PARTNERSHIP!

God did in the Bible. A rib was taken from Adam to make the Eve. It also states that a wife should be as one with her husband.

Sure, I'll get you a beer, but you'll have to supply the pie.

What does a name have to do with two becoming one? It is a label. Names and labels are in their nature symbolic.

its not just the name hombre, its a symbol of shared values. my wife and i were just like he and his wife, this topic did not need to be discussed. and if it was a topic that needed to be legitimately discussed then we wouldn't share traditional marital values. if that were the case, we wouldn't be married.

Whew, glad you cleared that up

This is the OT, I knew I had to make sure that was included in the retelling of the story.

I'm dropping my middle name and taking my maiden name as my middle name. I can understand if you keep your last name due to a professional attachment to it, but otherwise I don't see why you wouldn't.

A symbol nonetheless. Remove the symbol and the shared values still exist. The real thing is what is important, not the symbol.

A marriage is absolutely a partnership, but at some point, the buck has to stop somewhere.
You should certainly value your wife's wise counsel, but the husband and father is the leader of the home.

Would not care.
But my children would have my last name. That would be a deal breaker if my s/o wanted to keep her last name.

Chicks that insist on doing the hyphenated name thing, not for work/professional purposes, tend to be high maintenance and annoying as frick.

Just from my observations

I suppose the girls could have her last name. They are going to give it up anyway, right?
