The flood gates of what? You think every gay man is just itching to go out and molest a boy in the woods?

The gay people that would be joining are probably gay men who have either adopted a son or who had a son prior to turning full on gay.

Yeah, I would question a gay man without a son who wanted to be involved in BSA, but only as much as I'd question a straight guy with no daughter who wanted to be involved the the girl scouts.

Sadly NOTHING.

And you said your only problem was that sandusky types would be more easily allowed in, which you just admitted was false.

So you have no problem with this?

All I'm saying is it happens. There are tons of court cases to prove it happens but if you think that openly allowing it wont increase the chances then you are kidding yourself.

and its not my only problem with it.

You are still missing the point. Pedos are Pedos. Gays are gays. They are two totally different things.

Should all men be banned from helping their daughters with girl scouts? I mean, you're just asking for trouble there under your logic.

The Catholic Church sex scandal did have an impact on attendance and support, but it's not the only reason, and probably not thge biggest. First of all, the decline in attendance is not as great as you assume, but that's another story. Secondly, the incidence of sexual abuse in the Catholic Church was not greater than the general population or that of other churches. That's a fact.

I think the dirty little secret that a lot of Catholic families try to sweep their gays under the rug by sending them off to seminary school or the convent, has resulted and will continue to result in the abuse scandals we see today.

They are a private organization so they will do as the membership wishes.

If they get it wrong, people will vote with their feet.

Separation of church and state is typical liberal bull shit, peddled by snake oil salesmen pandering to a niche.
We call them the Founding Fathers, and the principle was forged over centuries of watching the numerous crimes against humanity perpetrated by theocracies, practices which continue to this day.

I detest what you call "antitheists" and their ridicule and intolerance of religion, but I'd take them over any of the theocracies throughout history.

A peculiar scenario IMHO.

I suspect gays and lesbians can make that choice on thier own without the encouragement of their families.

You answered your own question.... Fairy tales and ghost stories have no place in a place of education. If you want christian ethics for your kid, send 'em to Sunday school. If the boy scouts are promoting as much jebus and gawd as they are promoting how to tie a knot and start a fire with sticks, then they don't belong. But then again, I'm one of those athiests who got to participate in non-religious organizations that met on school grounds. So I never joined the scouts.

So tolerant and classy...

True. Some are in denial and see it as an escape.

Don't get me wrong, I think the vast majority are devout people who just want to serve God, but this element is, IMO, the result of gays being surrounded by a community that they know won't accept them, or gays who refuse to accept the truth about themselves.

And they're right. I grew up with guys who later came out of the closet. They tried to live in S. LA for as long as they could tolerate it, but the ridicule, assault and general shunning wore them down over time and they moved.

I'm not arguing that it is not an attractive environment for gays, perhaps some in denial and certainly some as predators. I was doubting that many parent are influential in encouraging obvioulsy gay children into religious orders.

Just because Sandusky married a woman it doesn't mean he isn't a male homosexual pedophile.

You do know that a lot of male homosexuals marry women, right?

I see it as a big mistake but theirs to make as a private organization. Boy and Girl Scouts are separate for a reason; they aren't about sexuality. Allowing homosexuals in the Scouts basically introduces a sexual aspect that is outside the scope of mission of the Scouts. If it happens, expect a ton of private Scouting organizations to be formed not affiliated with the Boy Scouts of America.

PLEASE explain to me how allowing a gay 10 year old to join Scouts "introduces a sexual aspect that is outside the scope of mission of the Scouts."

You do realize that a person's sexuality doesn't necessarily define who they are. As far as the pros and cons of allowing this, it's no different than allowing gays to openly serve in the military. There have been no problems at all. 10 year olds who want to join Scouts are doing it because they want to be a scout member, not to hook up with guys. Just like a 25 year old gay man joins the army because he wants to serve his country, not to meet dudes.

Nothing will change in the Scouts just like nothing has changed in the military.

Did I miss where the Boy Scouts of America are considering allowing open pedophiles to join?

Didn't read this entire thread, but, the BSA is a private organization and should be able to define their requirements as they please. But then our liberties and freedoms are being erased by a bulldozer these days.

I would not have participated in it if an openly gay Scout or leader was in my troop.

So you were a homophobe at an early age.

It's not homophobia. It's freedom of association. In other words, to freely associate with whomever you choose. In the case of the Boy Scouts, It's freedom of sexual orientation association.
