Agreed. I can't imagine an issue any less significant to a marriage. My wife kept her last name, which

Having parents with two different last names (and still married) did cause a few weird looks though.

yeah, i have a different last name than my mom. She took my step-dad's last name, but my brother and I kept our father's name. Was never an issue. My mom and step-dad both answered to Mr./Mrs. NoHo if one of my friend's called them that.
I've never understood the insistence on taking the last name. You can be just as committed with your maiden name as your husband's name and divorce is just as common for people who have the same name.

Agreed. I can't imagine an issue any less significant to a marriage. My wife kept her last name, which she has established professionally. No need to mess with stationary, listings, office shingle, etc. Insecurity seems to be alive and well on this board.

That is the only time I find it acceptable.

Just curious...why is it so important for your wife to take your last name? Presumably all your family and friends and those important in your life will know you're married. Your kids will have your last name. Why is it so important for your wife to take your name?

I look forward to taking my husband's name. I haven't done so legally cause we still haven't taken our honeymoon and I didnt want to stress about my passport not being changed in time.

Starting the process to change my name legally to his is one of the first things I'm doing once we return. His last name was actuall the same as my deceased grandmother's maiden name (NO relation) so it's also a way to be connected to her. Before she passed she was excited that I was gonna have her old maiden name

If ever I marry again, I would take my husbands name, but I was raised that two become one & the husband is suppose to be the head of the household. I quess I'm old fashioned like that.

Makes sense. I would take my husband's name in everything except my PhD. That was earned in my maiden name and will stay that way.

I don't think there is anything wrong with that.

ladies, how big of a deal is it in your opinion whether to change yours or not
Not a big deal at all. In fact, I think it's important to change it. One team, united front and all that jazz.

Plus I'm a traditionalist when it comes to stuff like that.

I'm don't really care what my wife wants as her last name. I pretty much feel that's her decision in life.

I do have an etiquette question. If Mary Smith-Brown marries Joe White-Green what last name/names do their kids get?

Your post gives me hope.

This is the way it is and the way it was meant to be.
I married my wife to love, honor, and cherish her.
She took my name not to lose her identity, but to make us become one.

Honestly, it would never be discussed. If she felt any differently, we wouldn't be getting married.

I always thought when I woman got married she dropped her middle name, moved her maiden name there, and added her husbands last name.
It's weird to me that all women don't do that???

Heck yes this. I have a cousin whose slew of a wife cheated. Still has the family name, just straight dragging it through the mud.

You are not looking at it correctly. Haven't you learned from the real men in this thread? The reason she takes your name is for you to display dominance. Your wife is your possession. Of course for most of these real men half of their possessions will be their ex-wive's somewhere down the line due to that thinking.

Wife didn't take my last name. Neither of us found it to have any importance whatsoever. I don't own her. I don't control her.

Or, it's like VetteGuy said:

He also said.

What does a name have to do with two becoming one? It is a label. Names and labels are in their nature symbolic.
