First time around, I felt like it was an absolute.
Second marriage, IDGAF. Second wife decided to just tack a hyphen and my last name on to hers. I was fine with that.

My strong default position is hell no that's not happening.
I'd leave a 0.01% chance of yes for outliers such as you described. But I see it as a sign that you her husband are temporary or, at the least, not set in stone.

correct. our child's middle name could be her maiden name. or she could do like my wife did and drop her old middle name and take her maiden name as her new middle name.
also, even if she did keep the name she would be the last one to have it because any kid certainly would have my name.
