They did which is kinda my point. All anyone remembers is "Don't You Forget about me" but they had a few other songs that were just as good if not better like "Alive and Kicking", "Sanctify Yourself", and "She Said".

"Dream Police" is one of the coolest rock songs there is.

Just thought of a couple more bands:

Oingo Boingo - don't laugh. All I ever remember when I was young was "Weird Science". I didn't realize how good some of their other stuff is. "Stay", "Just Another Day", and "Dead Man's Party" are legit songs.

Crash Test Dummies - Another group unfairly pegged as a one hit wonder. They had a unique sound that grows on you the more you hear them.

These bands aren't close to "most underrated" but they are definitely underrated imho.

Ah, yeah I remember now. Do not like-do not hate.

Probably a top 3 for me on underrated. Their first album is as solid as they come. Absolutely love the Superman Song and At My Funeral.

Sorry cool guy I don't even know what that stands for. And I have never heard of any of those groups you named earlier in this thread. Are they even "rated" at all? Where could someone find out about such awesome music? You would think they would be more available since they are so great.

you know the internet is a wonderful thing in that so much is easily accessible. this is a thread about underrated bands. the entire purpose is posting bands that most people are not familiar with, but the bands had strong influences on music, or are currently releasing really good albums that are not just the same rehashed formula as many bands that gain a lot of attention (often undeserved). one of the marks of a great underrated band is when bands that come after them (some that become very popular) state how much influence they gained from these bands that most have not heard before.

to other people that posted:
I agree about Big Star being extremely appreciated now. they're still definitely one of the great underrated bands of all time though given the fact that their albums originally received critical acclaim, but were not known because of poor distribution from a bankrupt Stax records and a lack of live shows.

and whoever mentioned Teenage Fanclub, I completely agree. they released amazing power pop in a time where most popular bands put out mediocre grunge.

King Crimson

certainly a well known band, but most people just know a song or two. I definitely would agree with you on them being underrated though based on In the Court of the Crimson King's influence on progressive rock.

re: Most Underrated Band of All Time?

actually think the Replacement have become underrated. They are slipping through the cracks of history. The punkers don’t claim them, and all prefer their contemporaries, Husker Du. The rockists don’t claim them, because they were left of the dial weirdos. And indie rock hipsters don’t claim them because they were too drunk, sloppy, and uncommitted to musicianship (and they are too busy fapping to REM). They are left without a modern fanbase to champion them.

And they are one of the best and most influential American bands in all of rock history. 20 years ago, I never thought the Mats would be a footnote, but they are becoming one.

And personally, its Archers of Loaf. Who are just a band who slipped through the cracks in the 90s. But a great damn band.

At the time, I listed The Replacements as one of my favorite bands. Now, they fall into the group of "did not hold up". I'll still listen to a few of their songs though. Skyway, Can't Hardly Wait, Waitress..., most of Tim, etc. Hootenany is still the worst album I've ever owned.

I know. I remember. You got all pissy when I posted before that I broke my copy so no other ears would ever be subjected to it.

Allmusic used to have Liam's quote about Teenage Fanclub being the second best band in the world. I never knew if Liam meant second to Oasis, or second to The Beatles.

I was making a point - and I was even slow to appreciate all three of those groups.

Maybe a younger group will catch my attention, but thus far I've been underwhelmed.

Isn't rock dead as a music form? Isn't just a product which is why Rush, Journey, Def Leppard and Styx all play fairgrounds, festivals and $hit now, because there is no demand for younger rock bands?

re: Most Underrated Band of All Time?

Interesting... Most people I know hold The Replacements in the highest regard... that said I guess I dont really know the musical tastes of the kids...

I think the genius and brilliance of the Minutemen are lost on the young generation...

I think Teenage Fan Club got their due in the 90's, but history has kind of cast them aside

There are so many good/great indie bands from the 80s-90s, but the indie kids today just pick and choose the cream of the crop from that era and move on... With the internet today, there is so much new music to choose from, I cant blame them... but the smarter ones will put some of that crap on hold and dig backwards...

Do me a favor, if you arent familiar already...

listen to You Am I's "Hourly, Daily" and follow it up with "#4 Record"

IMO, two of the finest records of the 90s... Australian band that was seriously underrated in the US, not else where..
