| Anyone ever fabricate a push pole? (Posted on 2/4/13 at 11:21 am)
I was looking into getting a push pole for my boat and the store bought ones are expensive. I'm thinking a long joint of either PVC or wood should do the trick. Has anyone done this?

I can image you being able to build one that isn't too heavy or likely to break for less than what you can buy...

I think I only paid $30 or so for my Avery push pole.

It would be pretty easy to make one out of aluminum, but you'd probably bend the shite out of it if you got mad at it. Know anybody that welds? A stick of aluminum isn't too expensive.

Get an old swimming pool net pole and attach a foot.

Buddy built one but not sure what he used for the pole. It was about a 3" aluminum pipe. Filled it with foam for floatation. Bitch was strong.

I'd get a 4" piece of 1.25" aluminum tubing and weld a foot on the end and fill it with GREAT STUFF and then cap the end. It'd probably cost about 5 bucks

You can buy just the aluminum foot part, then attach to whatever pole you want. I've had several made out of whatever straight tree close to 1.5" or so I could find. Put the foot on it with a couple sheetrock screws and use it till it breaks. Then cut another tree down. Cheaper than buying one.

I might look for some of this. Not sure where to get it. At lunch I went to Lowes and they have 2 inch, 10 foot poplar rounds that were rigid enough. Just seems that 10 is a few feet too short. The aluminum tubing is interesting. Anyone here from around Lafayette and have the capability to weld aluminum pipe?

There's a place in NOLA on N. Roman- 504-586-9191, they sell everything you can think of in SS and Al. Think they also have a branch somewhere else in LA. Check them out.

Yes, Its easy with PVC. Don't forget to put a long wooden dowel in the pipe for some rigidity. I glue them end to end to get the length They last forever

Not sure how big your rig is but I've always thought of PVC as pretty flimsy. I like some of the other ideas though.

I used schedule 80 1"1/4 pvc and cut it off at 18' and put a tee in the ends, works great here in the Fla muck

LA muck much worse than FL muck. I just don't find PVC rigid enough when I have to bear down on it, I even bent the alum ones when I've been in a real bind.

I know certain pvc pipes fit well into each other, not sure about sch. 80 though. Will have to check.
