I'm surprised this hasn't happened before. There was so much external stuff running off what's basically industrial grade extension cords. It's like asking why Clark Griswolds Christmas Lights went out. Probably the only thing you can do if you want to make sure this never happens again is bring in more capacity to the area and possibly separate the SuperDome from everything else. I'm not sure what that would require technically or if that's even feasible, but if it is they should do it and be very public with an overkill upgrade.

The have their own feed...actually, they have two feeds dedicated to them.
Entergy/SMG said there was "a piece of equipment that is designed to monitor electrical load, sensed an abnormality in the system". Basically, there was a piece of equipment that saw a problem (they are usually sensing under-voltage or under-frequency), and it tripped a breaker on that feed. We'll never know the exact problem, but someone is in trouble this morning.
