| How did facebook overcome Myspace? (Posted on 2/3/13 at 1:05 am)
In the world of social media... always thought several years ago that Myspace was pretty cool. Had so much more to offer from interaction, personalization, connection with media, bands, etc. than plain jane facebook. Why did myspace basically become non existent?

Too much custom shite. I hated opening someones page with the backgrounds sparkling and some crappy song would start playing.

I still like MySpace for local bands. Don't have Facebook.

It was easily the most ghetto large website in the history of the web.

Exclusivity combined with a clean, simple interface. Myspace was a damn disaster. I didn't want to see 900 pictures in the background, a bunch of scrolling text, and some terrible rap/pop music every time I tried to e-stalk someone

Better marketing. The backing of the biggest venture capitalists in the game. Excellent targeting - didn't just go after young people.

It's simplicity. Which ironically, it's getting farther and farther away from. Facebook is slowly evolving into Myspace. Just today I realized when you receive a comment on a status, it's beeps now. I liked Facebook because it was easy to navigate. I remember when notifications were in the bottom right corner. Now with the timelines, SHARE THIS IF YOU LOVE GOD, aborted fetuses, abused animals, it's becoming damn unbearable.

This can't be explained in a post...marketing, programming, usability, their open graph API platform, community development, etc.

Facebook wasn't the downfall of myspace, myspace screwed itself when it started trying to become facebook.

Does anyone remember Friendster? I think they predated both MySpace and Facebook.

Yeah, Facebook started out with upper crust college kids. The kind of people that have money, and that marketers want. MySpace was a bunch of broke people. Facebook was way more legitimate as a business tool because of its clientele of college kids and better even, recent college grade.
