Yeah - those mean Republicans are a cake walk compared to our "real" friends out there in the "real" world.

Senate hearings proved is that he's not good at the art of filibuster.
He wasn't there to delay a bill in consideration on the Senate floor, he was there for a confirmation hearing for an Executive level job. He was basically clueless when asked questions towards that end.

Did Hagel say members were intimidated? If he said it, he should own it. If he said it, he certainly should have been prepared for the question. He wasn't. Being wholly unprepared for a Senate Hearing is indeed a "no-win situation".
Hagel has the Democrats on his side right now, but they are as intimidated by AIPAC as the Republicans. Answering this question honestly would have caused them to abandon him. The object of the game is to get confirmed, not make headlines in every major newspaper in the nation.

That is STANDARD FAIR for Congress. It is a bipartisan habit. It sucks. It is completely predictable. Hagel was just bad. The answer is "that statement is taken out of context, Senator. You know that. It is not indicative of my feelings on the matter. Provide my quote in context, or we can move on."
Hagel did tell Cruz he wanted to hear the whole unedited videos and all the statements in context, but Cruz refused to provide them. Keep in mind that the videos are from Cruz' own youtube account so he's the responsible for the dishonest editing. I understand what you're talking about, but I think what Cruz did was particularly egregious, more befitting a radio talkshow host than a Senator. I've never seen anyone in Congress take it that far. In the future, I can imagine that nominees will just refuse to answer any of Cruz' questions if he's going to employ this tactic.

kinda like the President 1st debate performance against Mitt. Of course - that didn't work out too well for mitt in the long run.

Cruz' questions were not fair at all. He took quotes totally out of context in a manner that would Sean Hannity make blush
the same folks who are up in the MSNBC threads horrified that they would edit video to embellish, are citing Cruz's hack job doing exactly the same thing at these hearings.

that's exactly what Hagel did. Went out of his way to try not to confront and defend and came off looking like a twisted marshmallow.

Yeah, I agree with most of his positions. But the world of military and defense is neither fair nor as predictable as those hearings. Hagel seemed more thoughtful in the past than he was Thursday. Disappointing, because if he's confirmed (sounds like he will be), the performance will weaken him as SoD.

Personally, I have no confidence in him in that role. What has Hagel ever done to demonstrate the ability to administer an organization as large and complex as the Defense Department? So what if he has great political skills? If we are going to be reducing the size and costs of our military I would rather someone with proven administrative skills than political skills be in charge.

Or did President Obama nominate him just to stick it to the Republicans? Did he do it because he thought it would make him look more centrist?
I think he's right on defense spending and won't be arm twisted by Israel. I don't particularly care about the hearing.

The only reason he's being nominated is to cut the hell out of defense. Now, some cutting is, of course, necessary, but he's there to cut defense, so Obama can spend more on other things, some of which also need to be cut.

That's what the OP was about, but I would imagine that the reaction would have been the same, or even worse, if Paul or Hagel were nominated for state.
Why the frick would Ron Paul want to be SecState? I bet that appeals to him about as much as Ambassador to the UN.

I do. Hagel is very well respected within the defense community and has many long-standing relationships with top brass and all of the major contractors.

Dick Cheney had been Chief of Staff to the President before being appointed Secretary of Defense. I'd put that administrative experience ahead of anything on Hagel's resume. What liberals forget about Cheney as Secretary of Defense is that the size of our military was reduced while he was Secretary of Defense. He was in charge of overseeing the peace dividend when the Soviet Union collapsed. Or don't you remember the large numbers of reservists who were recalled to active duty to fight the first Gulf War?
