| Does anybody think Chuck Hagel will be a good Secretary of Defense? (Posted on 2/2/13 at 8:41 am)
Or did President Obama nominate him just to stick it to the Republicans? Did he do it because he thought it would make him look more centrist?

I did, but his performance in confirmation hearings was horrible. Not sure he can get thru now.

His effectiveness as the Secretary of Defense has no relationship to his ability to perform in an inquisition. The only thing the Senate hearings proved is that he's not good at the art of filibuster.

Well, of all the candidates for Secretary of Defense, he is one of the least evil.

As hostile as the Republicans were to Hagel, can you imagine how they would have gone after Ron Paul if Obama had nominated him?

Meh, I'm not buying that. The questions he flubbed were fair, predictable and pertinent. Hagel did such a poor job, it raises reasonable questions as to his competence, regardless of party.

Political positions aside, there is absolutely nothing in Hagel's record demonstrating any management capability. Therefore, I must conclude he would not do a good job. On the plus side, being half-assed would make him an outstanding performer in this administration.

That's what the OP was about, but I would imagine that the reaction would have been the same, or even worse, if Paul or Hagel were nominated for state.

I really had no idea of who he was, but as I see more and more of the confirmation hearings, he has no reason being the Sec of Defense... The part where he is passed a note to correct himself and then the Representative says "Actually, we do have that in place" was absolutely pitiful

And then Levin had to correct his correction. He bungled the shite out of that hearing.

Cruz' questions were not fair at all. He took quotes totally out of context in a manner that would Sean Hannity make blush. For someone new to the Senate, he's quickly developing a reputation as the most dishonest member of Congress. A least Graham and McCain didn't quote Hagel out of context, but their insistance on yes or no answers to loaded questions was ridiculous, and Graham's demand that Hagel name members of Congress who are intimidated by AIPAC was a no-win situtation for Hagel. Graham reminded me of a mafia don back in the 1960's insisting that there is no mafia. Inhofe's question about Iranian politics was irrelevant.

He has a more impressive resume than Dick Cheney had before he got the job.

Agree 100%, how do you prepare for a circus performance and what would that have to do with his abilities to adminster DOD?

Did Hagel say members were intimidated? If he said it, he should own it. If he said it, he certainly should have been prepared for the question. He wasn't. Being wholly unprepared for a Senate Hearing is indeed a "no-win situation".quote:

That is STANDARD FAIR for Congress. It is a bipartisan habit. It sucks. It is completely predictable. Hagel was just bad. The answer is "that statement is taken out of context, Senator. You know that. It is not indicative of my feelings on the matter. Provide my quote in context, or we can move on." How did Hagel handle that? Poorly.

Hagel is there to cut defense, bottom line. They have to reform veteran benifits and a number of other things. Hagel gives no fricks. He is perfect for his time IMO. If both sides hate him then you know he's the right choice. He is not a Neo-Con, he's actually a real conservative. Eta: He bombed bad yesterday at his hearing. I would be worried if I were Obama. Although, a filibuster of a fellow GOP member would be seen as extreme by the Republicans.
