| CNN: GOP And Dem Senators “Shocked” At How Badly Hagel Botched His Confirmation (Posted on 2/1/13 at 8:55 am)
CNN reports he was 'peppered with hostile questions.' Bottom line, Hagel failed in preparation. Video

I think we're right at 50/50 as to whether or not the nomination will be taken down in the next couple of days. I think he's "confirmable", but it will be a tough fight - perhaps one on which POTUS wants to expend political energy - at least not right now. What would be smart, brilliant even, is for POTUS to approach McCain about being SecDef - talk about a game-changer.

I think he pulled an Obama circa 1st debate and held his tongue hoping to skate through. He should have hit back especially with Cruz's MsNBC like edited video that was tossed t him.

I don't believe his confirmation should be denied but we should always ask the tough questions and apply mucho pressure under the lights.

I'll admit, I don't know much about Hagel, but isn't a big issue is his anti-jew background? Or something like that? I know a reporter pointed out earlier he was asked about negative jewish comments and his response was "That is the only negative comment I've made ON RECORD" Da What? So you are basically admitting that you make them, just not on the record

Apparently he doesn't love Israel as much as America, which is a disqualifier for the majority of the Republican party

He also demonstrated his inability to answer a very simple yes or no question., and then refused to answer it and gave some convoluted "I was talking about the bigger picture" BS answer. Choke

It's all about the him talking talking about the Jewish lobby being too strong... Which he had a point the way they have these senators carrying their water. It won't work though:
quote:
"Democrats -- from both the White House and Capitol Hill -- tell First Read that they're still confident Hagel will win confirmation. You're unlikely to see a Senate Democrat vote against him or even peel off today; in fact, the hostile GOP questioning might have made Democrats even more united, or so the White House hopes and believes. And if that's the case, Hagel will have support from a majority of senators. So the question becomes: Do Republicans decide to mount a filibuster against Hagel? That could make things more problematic for his nomination, because he would need 60 votes instead of 51. But it also would create a problematic storyline for Republicans: Do they really filibuster one of their former colleagues who fought and bled in Vietnam?"

And his comments on the surge in Iraq which he terribly bungled and outright refused to answer a yes or no question from McCain I don't get the Repub frothyness over fighting this nom, but Hagel didn't do himself any favors

Hagel was quoted as saying the Jewish lobby is strong in D.C. I don't know why Republicans have an issue with that. It is. Many in the strong pro-Israel lobby have close ties to the Evangelical lobbies. They have influence. Hagel was just stating a fact. He wouldn't be my top choice if I could choose anyone for Sec. of Defense. But we don't get any choice. We get whomever President Obama is willing to nominate. I'd rather keep him than have someone like Michele Flournoy find herself appointed to that position. Hagel also draws fire form the "you Mardi Gras'ers are going to hell" Evangelical nuts and the "every business should have rainbows for gay pride" pricks. I kind of like that both those extremes hate him.

Well he's the opposite of Kerry. Kerry played the game but was loyal to his party and the close network within the halls of the Senate. Hagel turned on his party ,in their eyes, and with help, threw away long standing friendships and allies within.

The fact that he said he had no strong opinion or clean position on key issues like Afghanistan was most problematic to me. You would think that would be one of the first things that you would form a clear message on. The McCain and Graham exchanges were more theatrics that he wasn't prepared to answer properly than actually being substantive. The Hagel choice in general seemed bizarre to begin with. Don't think either dems or republicans would be upset if Obama decided to pull the plug and nominate Flournoy or Ash Carter. Doubt it happens though.

Yep, or at least one of them. Hagel didn't do himself any favors during the hearing yesterday, though. He botched it.

not v surprising. Obama: "I tried. I nominated a republican, and even he wasn't good enough." Republicans then get skittish, and next nom sails.

Makes me wonder if he's Obama's version of Harriet Myers. Pull the nomination and then give them someone more palatable by comparison. Just a thought.

Yeah, like i said, the exchange I saw between him and McCain was pretty damning... McCain: "You can give your explanation after you answer the question, its a yes or no" Than Hagel avoiding answering and then McCain; "Put it on record that he has refused to answer the question"
