The point I was trying to make was that if he is willing to change what he says because someone slipped him a memo what else will he bend on?

Weaker than I originally presumed. He is speaking extemporaneously for hours, WH aids are monitoring, if htey catch a mistake they advise, he represents the administration.

If he's going to be sec of def he better be able to stick by his guns

You obvioulsy have no clue about a Cabinet officer representing the administration. They aren't put their to freelance.

Clinton was no hawk, unlike W and Romney who supported the Vietnam War. Clinton potested against the Vietnam War.

I don't see anything false in that statement.

It was more like an total incompetent trying to deflect. That article is nothing but wishful thinking.

Really, it was pathetic, and if he does get confirmed, we are in for it.

Totally unqualified to be SoD, who's only appeal seems to be that he's anti-Israel and an Islamist.

I was stunned at how poorly he was prepared.

re: Hagel stumbles on Iran questioning

Sorry, but I listened to it most of the day, and it was bad.

Dems had to come back multiple times to him after anwering questions to rephrase his answer.

It was bad. He came off as weak and vaccilating.

He ended his testimony by basically saying, "hey, I won't be the one making policy". Which is true, but if a nominee has to say that publicly after such a disastrous hearing, you know it was bad.

HC had-allegedly-differences w/BO in Foreign Policy, but she managed to get confirmed. Hagel was way out of his depth, and it showed, which begs the question:If he can't handle Ted Cruz, a Frosh Senator of a few weeks, how's he going to handle the Russians?

re: Hagel stumbles on Iran questioning

I don't blame him for doing the rope-a-dope when he was being asked such ridiculous and loaded questions. It's what you're supposed to do when someone asks you if you still beat you wife and demands that you to answer yes or no.

EDIT: By the way, he's not the first person to do the rope-a-dope during his/her senate confirmation hearings. Samuel Alito and Sonia Sotomayor laid on the ropes too. Hell, when Clarence Thomas was asked about abortion, he said that he had never discussed abortion with anyone and hadn't given it much thought, and no thinking person believes that lie. All of them did what they had to do, which is avoid walking on any landmines.

Sorry, but did you even watch or listen to the hearing?

There were no "When did you stop beating your wife" questions.

I don't like Hagel. As a matter of fact, I dislike him intensely. I don't want him as SoD.

But I'm writing this objectively.

Here's 1 quote from Politico:

quote:

Whenever he was pushed by his former colleagues, Hagel would often stutter, pause or plead ignorance, saying he couldn’t recall his past statements or would edit them if he could.

Well that explains everything about your lack of objectivty. Unless he's being nominatied for the Secretary of Debate, I don't give a damn about the fact that Hagel isn't glib and articulate. W was elected President two times but he often sounded as though English was his second language. Who gives a damn? We don't have a system like the British do where he would be expected to take on all-comers in the House of Commons, and that type of skill is a necessity.

answering questions in the Senate on national TV is a lot different than talking to Russians behind closed doors

McCain is still butthurt he didn't get to win the election and keep 100,000 troops in Iraq.

I admitted my lack of objectivity to you.

He was unable and unprepared to deal with the intense questioning. That was the point of the OP, and I concurred. Even the Left of center Politico conceded that.

This has nothing to do with W's style or Hagel's style. This has all to do with Hagel being unable to provide answers. Stylistically he stunk. But more importantly, he could give no coherent reasoning for past statements. He could not hide or diminish his anti-Israel sentiments. When confronted with the tape of him agreeing, or at least not even challenging a call on Al Jazeera that the "US is the bully of the world" he had no reasonable explaination.

And I don't care how much you may feel that the "US is the Bully of the World", I would hazard a guess that the vast majority of Americans don't think so, and that's a helluva thing for a US Senator to let go unchallenged.

re: Hagel stumbles on Iran questioning

quote:

What else did he say? Your video cut him off after 6 words? Why do you think that was edited that way?

Your suspicions about the abrupt editing of the video have been confirmed. Here's the complete exchange from the Al Jazeera video:

EMAIL QUESTION: “Can the rest of the world be persuaded to give up their arsenal when the image of the U.S. is that of the world’s bully? Don’t we indeed need to change the perception and the reality before asking folks to lay down their arms (nuclear or otherwise)?

HAGEL: Well, her observation is a good one, and it’s relevant. Yes, to her question, and again I think that’s all part of leadership. That’s why this must begin with the United States and Russia. Look, for example, what President Obama has done in the first two months he’s been in office. His Secretary of State, Mrs. Clinton, has met with the Russian Foreign Minister. She’s been in five regions of the world. The president of the United States is out of the United States now. He’ll be in different parts of the world over the next week. I think that is the beginning of, not just symbolism of reaching out, but, in fact, engaging, listening, finding common ground to build common interests based on consensus. We’re going to have differences. We will always have differences. But we should define our relationships based not on those differences but on our common interests.

Here's a link to the entire video:

LINK

What I find amazing about the video that MFn GIMP linked is that it was from Ted Cruz' own youtube account, which means that he's responsible for the dishonest editing because if this was a video that he or someone on his staff stumbled across in its already edited version, he would have just linked the original. Talk about a hack. This sounds like something Sean Hannity would do.
