No. God did that because he works in mysterious ways.

Mainline protestants are usually your Episcopalians, Methodists, Baptists, and others who claim a denomination. These people also tend to be rational and reasonable in religious discussions.

The "evangelicals" tend to be non-denominational and talk about bull shite like the "war on Christmas", etc. Sometimes people who are in a particular denomination will lean this way, but for the most part, these folks are those who claim that because they have a "relationship with God", you can't call what they do "religion". Your televangelists and megachurch preachers also tend to fall into this category.

re: 27% of Americans say God influences sporting events

This is a very deceptively vague poll. If you are a believer in God, and you believe in predestination, ergo you should believe that a higher being influences sporting events, as they are earthly occurrences.

The question isn't "Do you think God directly influences the outcomes of sporting events?"

Basically it boils down to "Do you believe in predestination, free will, or somewhere in between?" The commonly held logic, according to this poll, suggests that most people believe that a "God" has no interest in sporting events. Most people probably subscribe to this view without thinking about the notion of predestination.

Yeah, I used to be one of those.

You get psychos there too. A guy I knew would literally hang out in ERs and try to tell rando people about the word of God.

Honestly one of the moments I have been the most disgusted with people.

If God influences sporting events, then he must be a bandwagon fan.

And I hate bandwagon fans.

I can picture it now. My neighbor pleading, "Ugh, God? i know you're busy and , ugh, I hate to disturb you but my house is burning down as we speak."

[b]"MY HOUSE...MY HOUSE...WAH, WAH, WAH! i GOTAA frickING GAMEPLAN BALTIMORE HERE...[/]you know what? I was pretty rude just now. So why don't you go spend a few centuries in Purgatory to think it over, mmmk? My house, my house...what a selfish species."

That kind of thinking doesn't make much sense if you believe in a benevolent god who allows man free will IMO.

If individuals suffer because of their own bad choices then God did not control their choices and is therefore not all powerful.

If God does control man's bad choices then he forces people to suffer on earth and in the afterlife because he chose to make them suffer - and the individuals who suffer are to be pitied for their bad luck.

he's saying that all members of religions that believe God is omniscient should say yes because that's what they believe, and to say that he doesn't have an effect on sports when everything else is part of His plan is hypocrisy.

He's not saying God picks favorite teams
