| Can solid LB play make up for the lack of experience on the DL? (Posted on 1/30/13 at 10:30 pm)
Much like the superb DL play hid our glaring weakness at LB in 2011? I'm not implying that the DL will be our weakness, but the lack of experience there is a bit concerning.

As a former d lineman and a small amount of coaching experience, a dominant d line is key to making LB's look good. The line doesn't squeeze the blocks down, the linebackers are cracking heads with offensive lineman all day. A d line really should occupy blockers. That's why the 3-4 is so good against the run. Big lineman take up blockers allowing elite lb's to scrape and flow to the ball.

I want to see what Rasco will do as a full time starter.. he along with Hunter will be huge keys to LSU's success or shortcomings in the front 7 next season. I think Kendall Beckwith is going to have a serious freshman campaign. He is an absolute freak of an athlete and will be playing for one of the best defensive coordinators in America.

I would say only in the sense that the Good LB play can drag out the drive. Bend but hopefully not break when the offense gets a penalty or an incomplete pass. Poor line play with only average lb play means they will be gashing you for 8 or more yards a pop.

I'm more worried about the secondary than the DLine.

I think our secondary will be better than last year. Mills played very well for a true freshman, Collins is right there with him. Loston being back is good, he needs to stay healthy though. I'm guessing Ronald Martin will be the other safety. He had a good year as a true freshman as well.

I am about torn there. We will find out 3 games into the season probably. But the DB's we lost this year were the one's that were being burned repeatedly.

Starting D-line will be top quality SEC talent. Brick needs to start developing line depth now though.

not fully, maybe on a LB blitz they can still get to the qb. but on passing plays it is important for the DL to get to the qb while the LB drop into coverage

It will be a tough year for us on DF. I think out df backs will be better than expected. It is our line & lb that I worry about. Keep your spirits up as we will be better than people think!

I played LB an SS in college and what I can tell you is when the D-Line struggles everyone struggles. So to answer your question: No, solid LB play will not make up for weak DL play. It's a fundamental truth to defense and offense everything boils down to the trenches.

Just hope with can put more QB pressure with our DL this year. Seems like we should get in the backfield more often.
