Majority of the time, i do my best to skip the opener when they are relatively unknown. Some openers are closer to a double bill, especially a lot of the ones listed in this thread. Perfect example, went to see black star during jazzfest last year. Galactic "opened", is that really an opener, not imo.

Although Jamey Johnson technically opened, Eric Church, who was the second act, blew Hank Williams Jr. out of the water.

So, Heady... I think you have your answer... No, they aren't overrated as a whole...

-in '97 at Centroplex, unknown Incubus opened for 311 and blew us away. -a year or so later when Incubus started playing The Varsity all the time, System of a Down opened and blew the roof off (again we had never heard of them, but did after that!) -A Perfect Circle opening for NIN (but were already huge since it was a Maynard side project) -Meriwether opening for Anomaly :)

Completely agree. A few months back I saw Railroad Earth open for Umphrey's McGee at Red Rocks and I would consider that a double bill.

No. Karla Bonoff was much better than America in one of the first concerts I saw. The BoDeans were better than Little Feat a few years later. (Bad shows by America and Little Feat - true). Zevon had a couple of opening acts that were quite good. Sometimes the opening act is a waste of time but sometimes they are pretty good.

This thread is great. If you can take anything from it, don't write off a band because you've never heard of them. They may just blow you away.

Back in the day those openers struggled to find any radio time,so you probably never heard of them. Now with the interweb you can quickly listen to everything an opener has to offer, which for me lately has been nothing.

depends on the act. Godsmack opened for Metallica once in nola. I enjoyed K's choice opening for alanis morrisette and Patty Smythe opening for rod stewart.

i think they are pretty good ... especially when you can plug in a solo act like Brother Dege in front of LBR tomorrow night. Perfect pairing.

That's going to be a great show. They absolutely killed it at the spanish moon last year. And brother dege is being hailed by Quentin Tarantino as the next big thing..

I always try to be there for the openers because you never know when you'll see someone who steals the show. I'd say there are more bad openers than good ones, but it's cool to discover a band that you likely never would have heard of any other way. Even if they never "make it big," if you enjoy their music that's all that matters. It is kinda cool to say, "Yeah, I saw <insert band here> back when they were opening for <insert second band here>." Provided you aren't doing so in an elitist way

i think this is really it. years ago, we didnt have access to music the way we do now. seeing an opening band might have been the only way to discover new music. now with music at your fingertips, that introduction to a new band isnt as important.

Agreed, but I think everyone at this point realizes P Groove is garbage and Brock Butler is a total junkie.
I saw PGroove like 5 or 6 years ago in Atlanta and I thought it was an awesome show but all I have ever heard about them recently has been super negative, what happened?

Exactly. I love opening acts because there's always the chance you will see a band that you've never heard before do something great and become a band you like. I love live music and I love the thrill of discovering a band. Many bands were opening acts that I knew nothing about but put on great shows, so I went out and bought some of their stuff. It's a great way to find music. It's how a discovered Frightened Rabbit, who is now one of my favorite bands.
