Never heard anyone use the word coke other than for an actual coke either. Not in real life, movies, etc. Been all around these southern states and never been asked "what kind of coke?". I have been asked what kind of Soda or either do i want pepsi, coke, mtn dew, etc. I have also heard the term pop by a few people who used to live up north.

Everyone says Coke, but I've never heard someone offer me a Coke and then ask me what kind of coke. Never. NOBODY calls a sprite "coke"

Are ya'll from the south? Coke is definitely a de facto way to refer to all sodas. In some situations it'd be weird to just say coke but someone might say "hey is there coke at the house" and they just mean soft drinks. Very common in arkansas at least.

Its not a "DirecTV DVR" dude its just a DVR. That's not some kind of trademarked brand name, dvr isn't any different than calling something a computer.

I do agree that the Coke phenomenom in the south is overstated. And that's hard for me to say because I think it's cool. But in reality, in today's consumer brand world, people are very brand aware.

You're mistaking your small group with what everyone else does. TiVo isn't used by the vast majority of people.
