KISS opened for Blue Oyster Cult at Independence Hall in BR, and The Who opened for Herman's Hermits at Redemptorist HS in the mid-60's. I've seen some really good opening acts in my day: George Thorogood, Blackfoot, The Babys, Bob Welch, The Divinyls, LA Guns, The Neville Brothers, Cheap Trick, John Cougar. I was also at the Kinks concert in BR and LeRoux was the opening act. Most of the uneducated masses left after the opening act and missed an awesome show by a legendary rock band.

I usually avoid openings acts, but a couple years ago I stumbled into an MGMT show too early and the opening act was Tame Impala.
Was at that show in Houston. Thought they were better than MGMT

I've met some people who were at that show My second fave example (after Hendrix) is The Rivieras ("California Sun") played a show in Anaheim or someplace in 1964. Their opening act was The Rolling Stones. But I can't find any info about it online.

I've learned about a lot of up and coming bands or artists by catching the opening acts

I've discovered some great bands that were openers. Usually I try to check them out on spotify or bandcamp before the show to see if they sound ok, then I'll decide if I will see them.

Depends on the concert I guess. Some opening acts include bands that have headlined their own tour. Went to the Crawfish Boil in Nashville a few years ago, Three Doors Down was the headliner. Papa Roach performed right before them, after Papa Roach was done, close to half the crowd cleared out.

Two great examples of why opening acts are great: I saw Rush open for KISS in 1975. Both played full sets and were awesome. I saw Climax Blues Band followed by Bob Seger opening for Bachman-Turner Overdrive in 1977. After Bob Seger nobody cared whether BTO played or not, he blew them off the stage basically.

I saw Pearl Jam and Smashing Pumpkins both open for RHCP. It was shortly before 10 was released, we had bought SP's first release so we were sort of familiar with them going into the show, needless to say those opening acts were great. Cheap Trick is currently opening for someone, I saw Rusted Root open for Del Amitri at Tips. Ani Difranco opened for Lyle Lovette at a night show during Jazz Fest one year, talk about a mixed crowd that half of it cleared out after Ani played. When Lenny kravitz toured for his first album he played at Tips and had at least seven openers, Snooks Eaglin was one of them. My wife was looking at some old pics from some bar she used to go to and there was a concert poster for some band I never heard of but the opener I did hear of, Bon Jovi, actually John before the name change
