| Question about receiving weather warnings on phone. (Posted on 1/30/13 at 3:13 am)
I just got woke up by my phone going ape shite and making a siren noise because we just got put under a Tornado Warning. It didn't used to do this, so I am wondering if there's some setting I've accidentally turned on or maybe it was automagically downloaded at some point. My question is, does anyone else have this "service" and if so, do you know how to turn it off? I have an Android phone (HTC) and Verizon is my service provider. Thanks.

Nah, NW AL. I knew we were supposed to have straight line winds in the upper 50's starting about 3:30am, but apparently there's some.circulation. Fortunately, albeit unfortunate for my slumber, the circulation is on one end of the county and I al on the exact opposite end.

Same here, but instead of my phone freaking out it was the tornado siren across the street that went off.

Yeah I heard them too, after I woke up, but I was passed out so hard they didn't budge me. That's the same noise (weather siren sound) that my phone was making, even though I sleep with the ringer off. Looks like the warning has been cancelled, but the line of storms still hasn't made it here, and I'm expecting the straight line winds to be a bitch. Guess I am up for the day. At least I passed out pretty early so I did manage about 3 hours of sound sleep.

Mine did it too here in Nashville. Its apparently a feature the government does now and I haven't been able to disable it. I'm not complaining this time though because a few minutes later my house started shaking from an apparent tornado.

Thanks. Back last Summer, during a flash flood warning, was the first time it happened and then this morning was only the 4th time, but I've had the phone awhile and knew that I didn't download anything to make it do this. Yeah, for the most part it is a pretty good feature. Just wish I knew how to edit the settings so I could filter which warnings set it off and could set it to vibrate. Thanks for the response and stay safe this morning as the weather moves through. .

Sounds like it is a Verizon thing. I have an iPhone and Verizon, and it didn't do it when I was with AT&T.

i have an Nexus Galaxy through Verizon that starts talking to me when there is a severe wether warning. I can turn the volume off and it will still do it. I have found no way of turning it off yet. I scared the crap out of my wife and I the other night. In the middle of the night we wokwe up to a loud woman's voice talking about a tornado warning.

It's called Wireless Emergency Alerts. Cellular industry got strong-armed by the gub'ment to carry these alerts on an opt-out basis. Which you can, see explanation and contact your provider if you want to turn it off.

For an iphone: Settings > notifications > emergency alerts (off). Should do the trick.

I got pissed off at that thing a while back at a party. Like 20 people's phones were all going off at the same time. On my GS3, when the alert thing came up, I had an option to select what I wanted it to go off for I think it was child abductions, mass murdering in my area, and a couple types of severe weather things. No idea how to get to that setting now, buy I was able to turn them off

menu/settings/running applications/turn off automatic warnings for the app that is giving the warnings.
