Damn. I guess I have a reason to start working out now.

If you're young and in shape, you'll be fine. Just sore. I think. I can't really say because you've never skied before, and I've been skiing my whole life. But you're going to fall a lot, because you're a newb. That's gonna make the soreness worse.

Get a half day lesson the first day, and do greens/bunny slopes the rest of the day. Start on the easy ones on day two, and work your way up. As long ad you are somewhat coordinated and patient, you won't fall a lot. I was sore, but Not enough to stop at any point during any of my trips. Also, make sure the boots fit right. Painful boots will be worse than any soreness from skiing. Seriously, I don't ski or work out much, and I survive. I go out each night of the trip too. You'll be fine, unless altitude messes you up. It helps if you are at a cabin with a hot tub.

Probably not. It isn't that tiring but again, you will be sore for a while.

This. The folks at the ski shop always make it extremely tight. It needs to be very tight, but not ridiculous. Lie to them if you have to. Your ankle should be tight and fixed, but you want just a little wiggle room in your toes. My dad loses toenails every time he skis.

Thanks for the advice.

Despite my skiing frequency, I am still seriously considering getting my own boots. I've had a few bad experiences, and one perfect one, to feel it seems more than worth it to guarantee they fit right.

My fiancee skied for the first in Dec 2011. The first two days she was miserable and went through 3 different boots. She wanted to have fun but the rental boots were killing her and she quit. I really wanted her to enjoy it so I said frick it and bought her a pair of custom boots. It was like night and day. She had so much fun skiing the rest of the trip.

They've just come out with some that are made like snowboard boots, which look way more comfortable. They have bindings that they snap into the skis, then you can just take the inner liner out and walk around in that. Might wanna check em out. I hate ski boots with a passion. If you have $1500 you don't really want

First time skiing last year, but my ski instructor told me that if your legs or back are sore/hurt, then you are doing it wrong. If you put all of your weight on your shins (leaning against the ski boots), then you should be good to go.

You won't be able to add any real mass but depending on your metabolism you could certainly shape up a great deal in that time frame. Eating healthily and really taking care of yourself for 2 weeks can do amazing things.

If nothing else I'd start stretching out. You are more apt to hurt yourself tightened up.

Should a first timer avoid heavy drinking bc of the altitude?

Light drinking in the lodges up the mountain will get you buzzed so fast, you won't get to heavy drinking.

So in 11 days there's no chance you're going to be able to noticeably improve your fitness. There are a couple things I'd recommend that can help before such a trip: 1. Drink a SHIT-TON of water leading up to it. I don't know if you've ever been to Colorado before, but the altitude can severely affect some people. There are pills you can take that thin your blood if you know you're going to struggle (my dad and brother take them), but I wouldn't recommend them unless you've had altitude sickness before. 2. Stretch like hell. You can't improve your overall fitness in 11 days, but you can definitely increase your flexibility some in this timespan. Make a habit out of getting your arse off the couch while watching the news and just do some simple stretches. Work your groin, hammies and calves. They're going to be the most tight and will kill you after hitting the slopes for a weekend.

if you are a good experience skier you don't need to be in the greatest shape, but if you are just learning it's gonna kick your ass. you tend to fight it at first and that will wear you down.

only thing you could is do squats every day for the first 7 days with no carbs, low fat, .75g of protein per pound of bw. gonna suck but you will lose a little weight. then carb up before going and let the squat soreness go away. but you will prolly pussy out after the first 2 days of squating because the third day you are going to be sore as shite. better to just suck up the soreness while on the slopes and not be a pussy. ftr though if you keep your arse in shape you dont have to worry about this.
