Back when this case was being discussed, I thought someone posted that she had an older cell or a cell that wasn't traceable for some reason. Is that familiar to anyone?
Yeah. I've got one of these bad boys... ...from 2006 or so and it can't be traced unless I'm actively sending or receiving a call or text. FWIW - I HATE being on the phone and know what shitty company I'd be if I had internet with me everywhere. Also - It's been run over by a car twice and still works great. Have to balance the positives and negatives.

Interception: You seemed to have inside knowledge of the investigation... Did BSL have a smart phone? Was LE able to approximate his whereabouts based on tower pings? If so, did the tracking records (if any) corroborate his version of events, as far as timeline and locations go, in his confession?

Talked to a guard in Lafayette who told me they tried to shank him within the first 48 hours in jail. He said the prisoners were openly plotting to kill him. ETA: Says he had never seen an entire prison react that way

Yes, his phone was pinged and tracked verifying his time and locations.

I'm surprised they let anyone near him in Lafayette. Shanking is too good for that guy. I hope he lives to be a 100 in Angola.

Gotta get a pay cell phone from Wally World if you are serious about it.

Agree, I think death is too nice for this frick. I was very surprised by the story of this guard. I was really drunk when we bumped into each other, it was at a Mexican restaurant in downtown Lafayette several months back. It's one of those drunks where I wish I'd remembered half the shite this guy told me, even though I always play dumb about the Shunick case. One of the things in this case that bothers me is the confession. I think Laverne hit Shunick on purpose and was trying to rape her. He makes himself out to be some sort of victim of circumstance in his confession. It really burns my arse but that's part of this guys twisted mind IMO

Great recap to all involved in thread tonight. I learned a lot about it all on this after watching the show. It's sad that people like Mickey have to share this beautiful earth with fricks like BSL. Watching tonight made me feel ill regarding this case. Just so sad and terrifying all at once. Glad he's at least behind bars. Kudos to Adam4lsu and Family for all y'all did and for everyone else who helped along the way. I lived in Lafayette from 08-11 and its sad that such a good community has to experience something like that.

Ditto. It felt eerily similar to living near campus during the DTL killings.

I actually watched the show twice tonight. Mostly cause I wanted to reconcile what I read and saw on TD with what Dateline had to say. I sort of live vicarously through LA through Tiger Droppings and this story hit home to me. My takeaway is mixed, and I really think I will piss some people off. First let me say I lived in Baton Rouge for almost 12 years. I moved from a place where we have no violent crimes. I now live somewhere again where there are no violent crimes. I've tried to justify the benifits of living in South Louisiana against the dangers. I now have a 6 year old. She cant wait to go to LSU. Im no longer sure I share the same desire. I brainwashed her into lsu and Louisiana. Now Im thinking University of Vermont or Pepperdine or so on. Im not saying south lousiana doesnt have its wonders, but I'm saying it is also a very dangerous place to live. I get how defensive the locals will be. One of the things that I first fell in love with regards how loyal residents are to their home state. Its at first intoxicating. For all its charms, I dont miss the crime. People of LA have to do some soul searching. You cant call it heaven and still boast one of the largest murder rates in the free world.

I'm not saying that you're necessarily wrong about people needing to do some soul searching here, but I think you're freaking out just a tad. There is crime everywhere. What happened to Mickey Shunick could happen anywhwere.

That's why it's important to teach your kids about the inherent dangers of the world and how to recognize situations that could be bad. Also sound decision making usually comes from making bad decisions. I shudder at the stuff me and my friends pulled at 3am. Of course my sisters had a curfew but I stayed out until 4am to daylight, but we weren't commiting crimes or anything. You can't live in fear, but you sure shouldn't put yourself in situations that can turn bad.

Dateline sure wasted a lot of time showing the kid that didn't do it.
