Right, but they don't/can't track a phone after the fact unless a call has been made or answered.
In other words, I can drive all over South Louisiana today with my phone on, and as long as I don't make or receive a call while I'm driving around, they can't go back and look at my cell info next month and tell where I was.
As far as I know.

Interesting...do you know if you would actually have to answer that incoming call for them to be able to locate it? Or would someone just calling a phone that is powered on and has cell reception enough to give that info?

pretty sure he partially buried her where he killed her in the cane field but his hand was too jacked up then went back and moved the body after seeking medical attention to the location where he lead police at the end

That's nuts! Were they living together? If my daughter were engaged to a suspected serial killer, I think I'd have to warn her unless I knew there was no way he would be in the same room with her. (Him offshore or her out of town for vacation or something)

You wouldn't have to pick it up, they can still tell what towers the called bounced from to get to your cell.

I'm not in LE or an expert, but it appears that cells are like any mobile device (iPad,etc or anything with wifi). THey are constantly looking for signals and under the guise of providing fantastic service, they are also tracking you. So even if you aren't using your phone, your phone is still searching for a signal so when it pops off a cell tower, your location within a certain distance will be essentially tracked.

From what I understand - This is correct. Just having it on, they can't backtrace your whereabouts without a call incoming or outgoing. You do not have to answer a call (or a text) in order for this information to be determined.
You can ping a cell phone that is on. I think some of the newer phones the phone doesn't even have to be on - just the battery in it - for it to triangulate. Pinging is not like calling. The owner of the phone will never have any indication this is happening (will not ring).

I remember reading both of your threads about this. I'm so sorry your SIL's interview was broadcasted tonight. They left out so much more that would have added value to the broadcast but included that interview for the emotional take.

Ok, but is this info stored/saved for all cellphones? Doesn't seem possible.
What I'm trying to find out is this.
Could LE or my cell provider look back at my phone records/info and be able to tell every place I've been, even when I wasn't making or receiving calls? I don't think so.

I think the speculation was that she had an older phone that couldn't be tracked if powered off and newer smart phones could be tracked.
