Currently have a beard I want a short break from, so I'm going to give safety razors a shot. Just bought a Merkur, badger brush, and some cream off Amazon for $55. Pretty sure if I don't like it, I can sell the razor a recoup some of my money. That Badger and Blade forum mentioned earlier has lots of good beginner info, and is fairly easy to navigate since it's all compiled in one post.

Will do. I trim my lower neck when I have a beard and often have razor burn. I'm hoping this prevents that and I can continue using the safety razors to trim after growing my beard back.

I'm going to update this now because I wasn't totally truthful before. I did buy a set today with the Merkur safety razor. The high end $95 one along with the entire set. Just got off my first shave and a few observations: 1. This is no better than a Fusion. I see why they even sell it in their store. The shave isn't any closet than that. I made 3 passes, all with new lather. Only knocked myself twice on the chin. Beginners luck. 2. The brush smells like a Badgers a-hole. I don't know what it is. May be a combo of the scent I got; don't know. 3. The shave products by themselves are excellent but it seems this stuff will last a while so whatever. 4. It's a decent shave and I assume it will save money in the long run but it seems you may lose your money on the back end with the products. Everything cost me $198. Razor, Extra Murker blades, gift set, etc. They were 20% off today so I did save $80. This just seems more of a novelty thing but it does provide a close shave. Now that I'm checking it, it does do a pretty decent job. Keep another razor around to trim around your nose.

I have a Merkur and love it. I use Feather brand razors. The are the sharpest blades I've found to date. The shaving creams last forever from that store. I guess you can get them from anywhere, just make sure it has glycerin.

On the Badger and Blade forum I quickly skimmed for 10 minutes, they said this will be the case for awhile. You can shampoo the brush multiple times to accelerate the smell going away.

You know, I'm always critical right off the jump but it is a good set and not as difficult as I expected. The shave is quality and I actually do feel great afterwards. The brush is legit badger butt. Some hair fell out of it so I can't speak to this ones quality just yet. The stand for it is kind of dinky but it only cost $6. I think I got it because the Sales rep was a pretty personable young guy. He answered all my questions and walked me through it a bit. I wouldn't call it a waste of money because I've dropped $180 in a strip club before. In comparison this was pretty darn good purchase. Recommended.

The cheap, cheap brushes are apparently made of boar hair. That's probably even worse.

I use the brush and shaving cream, and blades from DollarShaveClub.com (whatever the middle package is...I think it's like 6 bucks a month). It works for me. I noticed a big difference going from the Gillette gel stuff to the brush/cream. I didn't like the safety razor, and I don't notice a difference between Gillette blades/dollarshaveclub. ETA: I shave 4-5 times a week, and one tub of shave cream usually lasts me 8-9 months. Sometimes I use the preshave oil if I haven't shaved in an extra few days....I can't really tell if it helps.

Just used my razor for the first time. Not bad. Have some cuts, but a new razor and shaving clean from a beard is probably not a good mix. I don't find this razor to be any more prone to cutting than my Mach 3. Think the main thing to get used to is the angle you hold the blade when shaving but I think I did fairly well. Feels much smoother than a Mach 3 shave for me and my skin is way less irritated. Still agitated the razor burn on the bottom of my neck some but that's mainly because I tried to cut those areas too many times. I used the Proraso eucalyptus cream and I loved it.

Been using AOS stuff for years now. First turned on to it by the manager at that well known Cohn Turner/McLavy/Carriage's/Perlis type place in Alexandria while I was up there for work and never looked back to the Gillette foam type crap after that. Only started using double edged razor w/in the last 5-6 years. Much better shave and worth the time IMO! I have tried a couple of different brands of after shaves. Currently using Truefit and Hill.

You're definitely doing it wrong if that's what you think. quote:

.Again if you're doing it right this shouldn't be an issue. ETA: If you're not going to be patient with shaving, I'd recommend you stay far the frick away from Feather blades. Those frickers are lethal!

I use a Merkur 34C and Feather blades and I'm never going back to cartridges (used a Gillette Quattro before). The shaving cream lasts forever (real cream, not shaving foam or gel) and I don't personally use a badger brush, I just put a little on my fingertips, get it wet, then rub half my face (I've found that if I lather up the whole face it'll dry out a bit before I'm finished).

I would go with: Merkur razor Feather blades Rooney silvertip badger brush Truefitt & Hill cream Anyone who thinks a Mach 3 and gel is a better shave is either doing it wrong or lying. No comparison.

No, they probably did it right. Some people just dont have the time in the mornings to spend twice as long shaving, and the Gillette Fusion ProGlide razor is pretty damn good. I really do get a closer/faster/less irritated shave with it. I'll spend an extra $3.00 a month on a proglide cartridge and use all the spare time I have left to bang my hot wife in the morning before I go to work.

Just thought I'd come back and post an update since it has been a few weeks...along with some good feedback about the store since they did such a great job. I was using the Sandlewood Oil kit. Problem is that I broke out pretty bad. Turns out I'm allergic to the oils. Well, I used it for about three weeks continually and went back to the store to buy an Alum Block (for cuts). They took the whole package back, no questions and exchanged it for the Unscented. Such a better shave and more enjoyable. My face was feeling tight and sketchy afterwards and during. No more- Unscented makes me feel like a brand new man. Also, for anybody who is inexperienced with a straight edge or double edge...make sure you invest $20 in the Alum Block. It's probably the best money I've spent. It has changed the entire experience for me. Overall, the double edge is great but I'm in need of practice. I probably shave 4-5 times a week and I'm getting better. I hope to progress to straight edge but for now, double is the hardest part. Just thought I'd come back and give some feedback. I was very impressed they swapped my kit out for a brand new one.
