| Give me your arguments for getting a 1911 .45 cal or a Glock 17 9mm (Posted on 1/29/13 at 3:01 pm)
Got my tax refund and am thinking one of these would be a nice purchase. I have shot the glock before and it is nice but the 1911 is so pretty and I like the .45 cal for home protection purposes.

What will its main purpose be? I keep my 1911 in its case while my Glocks get most of the workout.

I just got my 1911 and would have bought the 17 as well, but it was out of stock.

Glocks are ergoniomically terrible IMO. However, they are very reliable. 1911s are slimmer and feel better, plus it's one of the most reliable platforms out there. I like the feel and smoothness of a 1911. You definitely aren't gonna get the round capacity in a single stack (1911) as you will in a double stack (glock).

Glock- works everytime. Simple. Load shoot repeat. Clean every now and then if you like. Simple to use and perfect for protection. 1911 - Pretty but like a pretty woman it takes a lot of maintenance. If you like to shoot and take it apart to learn the mechanics, then get 1911.

I use mine for completely different purposes. It may be because I only have a few pistols but I do not use my 1911 on a consistent basis. Glock 23 on ngiht stand, Glock 22 in truck, XDs on hip, 1911 in gun cabinet. I do want a beater 1911 though. My Kimber is the 100 year anniversary and means too much to me to scratch.

Home protection and taking it to the range on occassion. What brand of 1911 would you recommend if I go that route?

Kimber, Colt, SA, Etc. I would not get into Wilson Combat or ED Brown price range just yet.

This is my biggest concern with the 1911. I should also say I only own shotguns for hunting. This would be my first pistol.

How much is your tax return? A $500 1911 vs a $500 Glock is no competition. The Glock is the better purchase. If you got a little extra coin though, the 1911 is the best handgun platform ever designed.

You can spend $300 or $3000. Just spend lots of time looking and reading reviews. Its hard to get a bad one from a big name.

A little over $1,000. Too much if you ask me. I hate giving the govt. an interest free loan.

There are so many people in love with the 1911 on this board, and I love them too. They are, in my opinion, the most beautiful (guns pretty?) handgun ever made. They feel incredible in your hand. And they have over 100 years of history. But, bottom line...the $500 Glock will be a much better, much more reliable handgun than any 1911 in that price range.

Get yourself a good 1911 then. Kimber, Springfield, S&W are around that price. Remington and Ruger are a little under that and are good buys too.

Young urban democrats like to attack in large groups. Based on the average hit:shot ratios, I prefer to have more than 7+1. But I do own a 1911 and like them and intend to buy more in the future.
