The Grave of the Greyhound is a poem, but this is the summary. Shows how amazing dogs are IN THE 13TH CENTURY, LLYWELYN, PRINCE OF NORTH WALES, HAD A PALACE AT BEDDGELERT. ONE DAY HE WENT HUNTING WITHOUT GELERT "THE FAITHFUL HOUND" WHO WAS UNACCOUNTABLY ABSENT. ON LLYWELYN'S RETURN, THE TRUANT STAINED AND SMEARED WITH BLOOD, JOYFULLY SPRANG TO MEET HIS MASTER. THE PRINCE ALARMED HASTENED TO FIND HIS SON, AND SAW THE INFANT'S COT EMPTY, THE BEDCLOTHES AND FLOOR COVERED WITH BLOOD. THE FRANTIC FATHER PLUNGED THE SWORD INTO THE HOUND'S SIDE THINKING IT HAD KILLED HIS HEIR. THE DOG'S DYING YELL WAS ANSWERED BY A CHILD'S CRY. LLYWELYN SEARCHED AND DISCOVERED HIS BOY UNHARMED BUT NEAR BY LAY THE BODY OF A MIGHTY WOLF WHICH GELERT HAD SLAIN, THE PRINCE FILLED WITH REMORSE IS SAID NEVER TO HAVE SMILED AGAIN. HE BURIED GELERT HERE. THE SPOT IS CALLED BEDDGELERT.

Newfoundland Dogs are instinctive rescue and life saving dogs who have saved some pretty famous people. Many Newfoundlands have performed heroic feats. Most "newfies" seem to have an instinctive drive for preserving and protecting human life, especially around water. Years back when I had a pond, it was not at all uncommon for ALL of my newfy dogs to swim out to me or one of my grandkids and let us grab hold of them , whereupon they would automatically turn and take the person to shore. They were not taught to do this, they just automatically did it. It never mattered the age of the dog...if they were in the water and there were people in the water, this was just something they would always do. And, when I would take out my little boat into the pond and throw a "bumper" overboard, they would automatically swim out and grab the bumper and take the boat to shore. History records how Napoleon Bonaparte was saved by a Newfoundland dog. As Bonaparte tried to escape from the island of Elba in 1815, where he was exiled, when the rough seas made him lost his footing and he fell overboard. A fisherman's dog (yes, it was a Newfoundland) jumped in after the drowning man and kept him afloat. Napoleon lived to experience his own defeat at the Battle of Waterloo. And (from Wikipedia) in the early 1900s, a dog that is thought to have been a Newfoundland saved 92 people who were on a sinking ship in Newfoundland during a blizzard. The dog retrieved a rope thrown out into the turbulent waters by those on deck, and was able to bring the rope to shore to people waiting on the beach. A breaches buoy was attached to the rope, and all those aboard the ship were able to get across to the shore.
Amazing dogs LINK

Thought I'd add to this great thread: Pizza Chain Makes Special Delivery for Soldier in Afghanistan
quote:
Army National Guard Maj. Shawn Fulker is thousands of miles away serving in Afghanistan, and when his wife's birthday came around, he decided he wanted to do something very special. Josephine Fulker loves Mellow Mushroom pizza, so her husband emailed Mellow Mushroom's corporate website on Thursday to ask whether one of the company's Jacksonville stores could deliver a pizza and a $50 gift card to his wife at their Jacksonville, Fla., home. If they could, he said, he would call the store and pay for it with his credit card. Mellow Mushroom did one better. Unbeknownst to Shawn Fulker, a local Mellow Mushroom franchise was working to make his request even more memorable. "We had the cook make a heart-shaped pizza, and then we stopped by the nearest Publix (supermarket) to get flowers and then we picked up balloons, just to kind of make it special," Brooke Chafee, a manager at the Jacksonville store, told ABCNews.com on Monday evening. Chafee and another employee of the store made the special delivery - which included the $50 gift card to Mellow Mushroom - in person to Fulker's home on Thursday. They didn't charge Shawn Fulker a thing.

I know right where that place is. I think I'll go there this weekend and let them know that they've had the honor of being on TD.

No problem, that makes me feel good to know it helps. I'll occasionally bump it now and then to keep it going. Everyone can use stuff like this every now and then.

Some humorous ones to start the day off with. Henry the dog was about to be put down, when a little boy family rescued him from the shelter. The little boy's name was Leo and he suffered from multiple brain aneurysms. It was a lucky thing his family took Henry in, because soon they discovered that Henry could tell when Leo was about to have a seizure. Nothing to say here... Bob picks Frank up from Kitty Prison for possession of catnap for the second time in a month. He's not pleased. Look at that frickin' horse. Just look at it. Woman finds true love after opening dating site catering to hair fetishes. I bougtz yo kittyz home, hooman. For recruits with humor problems the phrase "lick my balls" becomes hell on earth. Perhaps we didn't evolve after all? Parents?

Great stuff Tom. Question, I'd love to share this in the office, what would be the easiest way to add this to an email instead of using a hyperlink?

Whenever I send pictures in Gmail I just copy the actual picture, instead of the image url, and paste it directly into the email. Or if you have a lot you want to send you could save them to your computer, compress them with winzip or something, and then just add that as an attachment to the email. Help?

Yeah I've been trying to copy the picture directly into the email but the image won't show up. We work on a remote server so I don't know if that has anything to do with it, like restrictions and what not.

Could you just email the link to this thread? If not, are you wanting to send a lot of the pictures or just some favorites? If it's the latter you could probably just send them as attachments. Or try the winzip option. Something else you can try is if you or someone else has a USB drive just download them, load 'em up, and give it to whoever you want to. If none of that works I guess I could upload them to a public album on Photobucket and you could just send them that link as it would be safe for work. Let me know what you think/decide.
