I agree on Nonna's plus it is less than 3 miles from my house. I still like Manny's in Metry and some small bakery on the Wank makes a kick-ass one. The name escapes me right now.

Think I'm gonna check out the Whole Foods king cakes. BR king cakes aren't that good compared to Nola. Especially in the LSU area...there's zero places around here that sell them except Wal-Mart and Winn Dixie. Their definition of a king cake is a hunk of bread with colored sugar on it. Yeah, I could drive to Ambrosia to buy a king cake but that's at least a 20 minute drive. Whole Foods is closer.

Haydels is a much thicker cake to icing and tons of sugar on it too. Randazzo's has the cake to icing thing nailed and uses sprinkles instead of caking on sugar. Too much sugar and its just gritty imo.
