| Golf Club question/recommendations/ advice needed. (Posted on 1/28/13 at 11:28 am)
I had a set of irons custom fit about 10 years ago. I am a tall guy so standard clubs wouldn't work. A lot of my problem is my swing i know, but when I took lessons the instructor suggested getting my irons re-shafted to extend them a bit. Apparently they were still too short. I have always felt as if they were still too short. I am currently thinking of upgrading irons, but I really don't know which would be better. re-shafting the iron's I have, or getting a new set of irons custom fit again. What do you golf people think I should do? I have put new grips on them in the last 5 yrs and that didn't really help as that was suggested by the instructor as well.

I don't think club extensions are that big of an expenditure, right? Try getting your old clubs right, then upgrade with that length in mind. At least that's what I would do.

I was thinking about that, I've done it with a driver once. I just honestly never heard of doing it with irons.

Hell, you can do it with putters. You can extend anything.

I went to the Golf Connection once here in Lafayette to ask about getting irons re-shafted. I had some regular flex shafts in my irons and I was looking for something a little stiffer. He recommended buying a new set of irons with the correct shaft rather than re-shafting because 1) it is way more expensive to re-shaft 2) the shafts on the clubs that come from the factory are assembled and calibrated individually to each club head to insure proper fit, so it's better to just pick the shaft you want from the club manufacturer and have custom clubs made. If I were you, I would just custom order a new set of irons direct from a manufacturer and have them customize the shaft length for you. Of course I would highly recommend Titleist ETA: not sure if the same costs/principles apply to re-sizing.

A buddy of mine I play with is 6'5". He was custom fit once and all his clubs were +2" longer than standard. He now orders all his clubs either +1 1/2" or +2". Edwin Watts is a good place to find out what you need as far as shaft length and flex. Also going to one of the local demo days is a great way to hit the new clubs and talk with the factory reps who will also help you with club fitting.

I remember being really surprised at the cost of the extension project. So that doesn't surprise me.

This is really my plan, I just thought there were other legit options.

Well to be honest with you, I have never hit with a Titleist club. A few years back when the range on KS held demo days, I swung several clubs and found the Callaway's were awesome. Of course those were x20's so that was a few years ago. It's just hard to go into Golf Connection and start swinging clubs with someone watching me. I get nervous and swing worse than I already do. The demo days were perfect.

They never have demo days anywhere in Lafayette. The last place I saw one advertised was at fricking Oakborne. The last one i went to was on Kalist Saloom and it was awesome. Went 2 times to test clubs. But that was like 3 years or so ago.

I went to a demo day here locally, I'm 6'1". And the titleist pro said after I hit about 15 five irons that my lie and length were standard. I could go into any store and buy a set off the wall because thats how they come from the factory. Now this was 15 years ago. Don't know if anything has changed. You probably need some extra length.

Standard to most golf companies is 6'0"...every two inches you go up in height you will need to extend the length of your clubs .25". i.e.: if you are 6'4" tall you need a PW that is 36.25" long (standard titleist PW is 35.75") and a 9I that is 36.50" long (again, standard titleist measure is 36.00") Here is the chart

Haven't read any answers yet but. It is about 35$ a club to reshaft. I'm guessing you will need 10 clubs done. It is about 12$ to add an extension to your clubs. Most sets you will spend under $400 on are not able to be ordered at custom specs. So you will still have to spend the money on extending them. In short, Just extend them.
