re: Our increasingly trashy American culture

I'm not sure we're more trashy now. We are just:

1)Trashy in different ways

AND MORE IMPORTANTLY

2)Much better able to communicate our trashy.

I mean, 50 years ago, if you were into swinging(LOL), the only people who knew were your in your general circle. NOW, you can let the whole damned world know. You can put it on websites. You can blog the photos. etc etc.

Looking strictly at sex, there's no shortage of evidence that there were a wide variety of sexual proclivities 100 years ago. But, if you weren't into it, you could be 100% insulated from it. Not so much anymore.

What do you think has caused this? Lack of religion? Diminishing sanctity of life due to abortion and/or violent imagery (movies, etc.)? Liberalism in general? This is not a trick question, I'm genuinely curious as to what a non-religious 23 year old would attribute such dysfunction.

Cause: Welfare structure that has lead to purposeful minority reproduction for more money. No care for the lives but just for the cash. We have gradually accepted and tolerated less decency to the point of no decency. Our culture and heritage has been taught to us to be that of wrong! Wish us luck on returning to what made us a great nation.

The fact that mindsets like this exist. No clue.

The slaughter of 50 million human beings through abortion, many just seconds for birth, might have something to do with it. But what do I know, I'm just one of those loony pro-life wingnuts.

So you're one of those nut jobs that doesn't support a good eugenics program?

"The counts of the indictment are luxury, bad manners, contempt for authority, disrespect to elders, and a love for chatter in place of exercise. …

Children began to be the tyrants, not the slaves, of their households. They no longer rose from their seats when an elder entered the room; they contradicted their parents, chattered before company, gobbled up the dainties at table, and committed various offences against Hellenic tastes, such as crossing their legs. They tyrannised over the paidagogoi and schoolmasters."
--Kenneth John Freeman, 1907

Outrage over the younger generation is nothing new or threadworthy.

As to the general coarsening of American culture, this is undeniable and self-evident. Now you may approve and think it's great, but don't deny it. Did your father (assuming you've met) have to go through a metal detector and/or security sweeps to get into his High School? He probably would now. Did your Pops sit around watching midget porn because you do. In the 80's at my LSU frat guys wouldn't even cop to having seen it,it was a novelty, it was for losers. Real men got laid.We knew the name of Tri-Delts and Golden Girls not porn stars. Did your Dad freely use curse words around women/older people, because you do.Were LSU students chanting "suck that Tiger dick, bitch" in the 40's? 50's? 80's ?. When your GrandDad turned on the tv did he see a daily 60 minute scream fest between sperm donor and unwed mother, neither of whom can form a coherent sentence ? Did your GrandPops start taking Xanax when he was 14 to get through the day? Did the car next to him at the stop light rock your car because the music was so loud? Did the neighbor boy in 1950 or 1970 get shot at the mall, because mine just did last year. Do you lock your doors at night, because I grew up in Baton Rouge without having to.Did you ever see the City Of Detroit when it was great, because I did. Have you seen it lately? How about Nola? Or Philadelphia? I knew ONE girl who got pregnant when I was in High school/ college a generation ago, how many do you know? I'd never seen a nose ring outside of National Geographic prior to about 1992, and now they are ubiquitous. When my late brother got a tattoo in 1980 it was considered shocking, my parents were afraid he wouldn't be able to get a job, now I see face tats daily. When my kids turn on the Satellite why are they confronted with listings entitled "Anal teen babysitters" if they stray too far down the dial. America has basically decided to skip work, stay home on the couch and jerk off to porn and eat fast food. You call this "individualism" I call it Narcissism.

What you call "individualism" I clearly see as Adolescent Narcissism, extreme self-absorption of the variety that leads one to post 250,000 times on a message board about every banality of your truly pitiful and sad existence,in which the wisdom of porn movie dialogue trumps the wisdom of CS Lewis, Russell Kirk, Shakepeare, etc. You are literally unable to divine the difference anymore between the sacred and the profane. You are thus a moral idiot, emphasis on idiot. It is NOT your lack of morality that threatens me , it's the unbridled IDIOCY.You have embraced PRIMITIVISM and your frame of reference is so shallow that you don't even realize it. You don't know what you don't know. It actually hurts my head to listen to these banalities masquerading as profundities that come vomiting out of your brain. One never gets the impression that you are A MAN, but rather a boy that ones needs to explain things slowly to, with no hope that any eureka moment is forthcoming. And you and yours have dumbed-down our culture significantly. The message you send out is one of self-congratulatory idiocy, there is never a sense that you are striving for some kind of personal elevation.

To be a Man today in American culture means to largely opt out of popular culture. One must limit oneself to a smaller and smaller portion of American culture to avoid the mind-numbing STUPIDITY that is American culture. But the vapidity is spreading everywhere and is damn near impossible to hide from, whether it be the local mall or SEC football games. You are like the board poster child for Kardashian low-information AmeriKKKa, and sadly your victory is nearly complete.

re: Our increasingly trashy American culture

quote:

i don't disagree really, but i see the "coarse" nature of our culture being a reflection of a greater proliferation of information upon our society. myths, legends, and fables are rejected in the face of cynicism and reality

and it's not just historical information/explanation. the veil of our person has been removed

quote:

Now you may approve and think it's great, but don't deny it.

why would i dislike reality reflecting reality, instead of fake public personas?

quote:

Did your father (assuming you've met)

wow...i should RA this flame

quote:

have to go through a metal detector and/or security sweeps to get into his High School?

no. he lived in a world that accepted fable as reality. did kids in the 70s or 80s do this? they were living in a much more violent time (both in society and in school). the question you have to ask is why didn't THEY have to, when it was more dangerous then

quote:

Did your Pops sit around watching midget porn because you do.

no idea. porn was a booming industry as far back as the 60s and 70s. my generation didn't invent porn. we just admit we watch porn instead of lying about it like generations past did. i don't see how we're wrong for being honest

quote:

In the 80's at my LSU frat guys wouldn't even cop to having seen it,i

so lying is better than being honest? got it

quote:

Real men got laid.We knew the name of Tri-Delts and Golden Girls not porn stars.

why do you assume you can't get laid and watch porn?

quote:

Did your Dad freely use curse words around women/older people, because you do.

huh?

and my dad cusses more than i do and taught me how to cuss indirectly, but he's a yankee

quote:

Were LSU students chanting "suck that Tiger dick, bitch" in the 40's? 50's? 80's ?

do you want to get into what kind of fricked up shite frats did back in the 80s? i mean public insults. the pikes, for example are much more tame now than they were in the 80s. don't act like there wasn't plenty of vulgarity by students in the 80s

quote:

Did your GrandPops start taking Xanax when he was 14 to get through the day?

no he self medicated with alcohol. no difference

quote:

Did the car next to him at the stop light rock your car because the music was so loud?

grandpa? no
dad? yes

and my dad grew up during the muscle car generation, where they'd rig their muffler/intake to ensure they'd annoy/disrupt cars next to them. they didn't have the technology to do it via music, so they did it elsewhere

i have no doubt if they had the ability to annoy "normal" people with music, they would have

quote:

Did the neighbor boy in 1950 or 1970 get shot at the mall, because mine just did last year.

outlier event. when you went to the mall in the 80s, you were in much greater danger and at a higher risk of being shot

that's not debateable

quote:

Do you lock your doors at night, because I grew up in Baton Rouge without having to.

you grew up in an era where it was more likely that you'd get broken into and/or attacked

because you were ignorant of reality doesn't change it. it was a lot more violent and risky in the 70s/80s than it is today

again. my generation is living in reality and not myth. you still idolize an era that was more dangerous and then claim that we live in a more dangerous society today. you still have the idealistic myth of your childhood that doesn't reflect reality. my generation accepts reality and rejects myths. we're more "coarse" or "cynical" or "not lying to ourselves."

again. why was a culture where all of the bad stuff was ignored, hidden, or lied about superior to a culture where we accept these things happen and try to adjust to limit their negative consequences? honesty > lying

quote:

I knew ONE girl who got pregnant when I was in High school/ college a generation ago, how many do you know?

i think 1 girl got preggo in high school while i was there. over 4 years....maybe 2

quote:

I'd never seen a nose ring outside of National Geographic prior to about 1992,

well they were everywhere in urban areas in the late 70s/early 80s during punk rock. your ignorance doesn't change reality

quote:

When my late brother got a tattoo in 1980 it was considered shocking, my parents were afraid he wouldn't be able to get a job, now I see face tats daily.

and?

men used to wear suits and hats whenever they left the house. now they only wear suits for certain occasions

quote:

America has basically decided to skip work, stay home on the couch and jerk off to porn and eat fast food.

is that why kids of my generation are graduating with college degrees at a higher rate than at any previous time?

is that why kids of my generation kill, rape, and get pregnant at a lower rate than at any time since desegregation?

yeah we sound like a horrible generation who does nothing except all the bad shite

BS. Americans work longer hours than at any other time in history. Sure, the number of couch potatoes has increased as an unintended result of entitlement programs, but that pales in comparison to the number of people working longer hours.

total hours worked / total eligible workers = increasing

you obviously don't understand why i post

quote:

,in which the wisdom of porn movie dialogue trumps the wisdom of CS Lewis,

what?

quote:

You are literally unable to divine the difference anymore between the sacred and the profane.

no. i expect you to give me a precise definition of "sacred" and "profane" instead of some idealistic view that doesn't reflect reality. i'm the google/wikipedia generation. if you say something that's not true or with a sliding definition to suit your argument, i can find out i a couple seconds

that's why myth doesn't work in my generation like it did in your generation (or even worse, the ones before you)

quote:

it's the unbridled IDIOCY.You have embraced PRIMITIVISM and your frame of reference is so shallow that you don't even realize it.

i accept reality and i don't act like bad/weird shite doesn't occur. i don't lie to myself about people or their preferences

if you want to live a life of shelter and lies, then go ahead. i refuse to. my generation does as well

the formalism and myths of past cultures are dying

quote:

You don't know what you don't know

i'm objective.

i've studied a long list of religions and philosophies since i was about 10. i understand what is, what was, and how we lie about things. i don't shut things out. i want to learn things. experience things. discuss things

THAT is how somebody posts 250,000 times on a message board. an obsessive curiosity with the world (and people, especially) that i want to understand more fully

quote:

One never gets the impression that you are A MAN, but rather a boy that ones needs to explain things slowly to

i'm a borderline genius, bro, even with me choosing to dumb myself down to be more normal so i could be more social and understand people (which i did in middle school). don't try an ad hom attack on me because you've lost this debate

attacking the person shows an insecurity about your position. you've been doing that the past few pages

quote:

And you and yours have dumbed-down our culture significantly.

yes more people getting post-secondary educations are definitely showing how "dumbed down" our country is

quote:

You are like the board poster child for Kardashian low-information AmeriKKKa, and sadly your victory is nearly complete.

i hate trash

but i hate elitists, liars, and pushers of myths more

trash typically can't help it. they're idiots pushing a culture of idiocy. people like you can help it, but refuse to do so.

Wow. So much self-indulgence in this post. Did you splooge all over yourself after this?

I really love this part:

quote:

I clearly see as Adolescent Narcissism, extreme self-absorption of the variety that leads one to post 250,000 times on a message board about every banality of your truly pitiful and sad existence,in which the wisdom of porn movie dialogue trumps the wisdom of CS Lewis, Russell Kirk, Shakepeare,

Shakespeare basically wrote with what, at his time, would be considered "porn Dialogue". He had sex and raunchiness splattered throughout his works.

Just because the language is tame by today's standards, doesn't mean it wasn't what it was.

Same with language from our generation and yours. What was Taboo in your day, is tame in ours.

Also, if you hate our generation so much for everything we do, just remember: You are the generation who raised us.

ETA: Can I also point out the irony of a poster with the name LSUpimp bitching about coarse dialogue.

re: Our increasingly trashy American culture

also i'm going to continue my point with a GREAT example that just occurred

manti fricking te'o

the reason this story is a big deal is due to all the feel good/bull shite stories presented during the season. the "human interest" story is for the lsupimp generation. these sappy stories are often misleading and do not reflect reality, but they're eaten up by the mythological generations because they'd rather live in that world

what happens? it was fake. old men can't comprehend the situation because they're ignorant to what was going on, and my generation is like, "yeah that figures. he's probably gay." the old men of myth turn this funny story into a huge month-long ordeal because they feel violated that one of their mythical heroes lied to them

my generation isn't affected other than laughing and wanting to find out the truth. and the truth won't be found anytime soon because the media is run by old men of myth. again, it's no shock that deadspin, and not ESPN, broke this story.

*ETA: you can look at sports in general to see the generational gaps

look at advanced stats/metrics and how the proliferation is being accepted by my generation. look at the old men who complain and want to continue to mythologize the players and ignore the statistical analysis underlying the actual comparisons of play/value.

look at the changing standards of greatness. a good example is QB play. QBs are members of a team, and we are beginning to reject poor metrics of comparison when judging QBs, namely wins. wins are a team stat, not a QB stat. older men still use this insane argument, however, because that's part of the myth of these players (and playoffs, for that matter)

ah the response will be one of self-identification and perception bias

he'll say his kids are awesome. it's EVERYONE ELSE'S kids that are horrible

just like how he didn't have to lock his doors when society was a lot more dangerous and his home was at much greater risk of being broken into, but now when it's a lot safer and the odds of that stuff are lower, he HAS to lock his doors
