i disagree. most people are more open online. i think it's due to people being socially trained to present a fake persona in public

Eh, I think you get much more of a fake persona online. People may be more honest about their feelings, but not about who they are. It's a poor method of communication because it leaves out verbal cues, voice inflection...etc. Communication is so much more than words. The benefits probably outweigh the negatives but doesn't have the full effect of face to face interaction.

agree Case in point: ABC "Family" TV -- I mean, I see ABC "Family" and I'm thinking they'll be showing Sound of Music, Wizard of Oz, but it's garbage, high school sex, etc. Yet they feel the need to run a disclaimer that the "700 Club" does not reflect their views ..... we live in a fricked up upside down world where abortion is viewed as a good thing. We are fricked.

Nothing beats face to face. BUT, I would rather text a chick than talk to her, especially if I'm just meeting her or it's otherwise early in the relationship.

General Effects of the Single-Parent Household It has been found through varied research that children in single-parent homes generally fare worse than those homes with two parents. Statistically, in the United States, family structure does contribute to certain characteristics of a child's well being. For example, there is a prevalence of lower birthrates and higher death rates among infants when there is just one parent. Also, the number of children ages 15-17 in school and in good health is much lower in this group of children, and the number of children becoming pregnant at these ages is increasing. There are also signs that children who have gone through a divorce may have problems with depression, emotional stress, and difficulties in school. It has been found that adolescents from single-parent families were found to be three times more likely to be depressed than those living with two parents. Single parent homes are also associated with criminal activity in the U.S.A. Children from a single-parent household account for 72% of teenage murderers, 60% percent of people who commit rape crimes and are eleven times more likely to exhibit violent behavior. These statistics are astounding and the problems that accompany single-parenthood appear volatile.
Statistics on single parents I guess I am just alluding to the fact that the value of a traditional marriage and the positive impact it has on the child going forward has deteriorated. Whether this is through poor decisions or unfortunate circumstances is something i don't know on an individual bases, but the numbers don't lie.

out of wedlock births are at all time highs. Once unacceptable, they are now commonplace. Murphy Brown. Remember? And it epitomizes "trashy American culture". The economic issue is a result, not a cause.

Yeah online communication has it's place. It's an able substitute in a pinch. Don't get me wrong, this stuff is awesome in a sense but falls short of face to face.

Right. The unimaginable state of poverty that people live in is to blame for children being born to single mothers..bad decisions has NOTHING to do with it

due to government, not morality. a lot of these scenarios do have a husband-dad figure but marriage doesn't occur for benefits

remove welfare and medicaid and you'll see a huge drop in "out of wedlock" births

I like you SFP, but you really can't argue that you aren't a moral idiot. I mean your post count alone, confers a kind of Carny-freak-show status upon you. Not to mention your relentless vapidity on this thread.

that's great...not being sarcastic, that really is but what does that have to do with the rates of children from single parent homes when it comes to school, etc?

"Openess about sex" is just an empty phrase.I guess in your mind "open" is a vague word that can mean anything you want, and "closed" is like a crown you can place on the head of those you can't honestly debate. One can be honest about human sexuality and enjoy shagging one's wife, without celebrating the cultural inanity that is American Porn.It is possible to object to it for reasons of general INTELLIGENCE, and not just moral outrage (I have none), but I'm sure that has escaped you. It is the essence of lowest-common-denominator, and it's popularity doesn't magically confer some kind of Wisdom upon it, any more than execution films or scat films or anything else that titalates human psychology. It doesn't "outrage" me-it BORES me. And there we have the crux of this thread, which is that American Culture has strangely and inexplicably elevated the Profane to the Sacred and relegated the Sacred to the Profane. The most elementary, basest human function is intertwined with American Celebrity Culture and inexplicably intertwined with some level of cultural profundity. Which in itself, is just pathetic.

well if they're getting pregnant as teens at a decreasing rate and killing people at a decreasing rate, then the actual results aren't this unbelievably horrible reality like you're presenting

As late as the 60s and 70s, when a girl got pregnant out of wedlock it was not something to be proud of -- I mean, her family would support her obviously, not throw her on the street, but it wasn't celebrated as it is today, ie., a 16 yo girl gets pregnant and they're throwing baby showers for her and gushing on Facebook about it like it's something to be proud of.
