re: Our increasingly trashy American culture

What do you think has caused this?

Giving women the right to vote.

IT was a great idea, but once the 'soap opera' era became a huge avocation for millions of women, who didn't as yet have to go out an earn a living, the die was cast.

Didn't take too long for the 'forward thinking' liberals to grasp the idea that millions of votes were out there to be harvested based on emotion and 'good intentions.'

It has gotten worse ever since, with the most idiotic nonsense put forward - all with good intentions - that did nothing but debase society.

Political correctness became a powerful weapon which the liberals used to further dampen any opposition to the ongoing assault on once universal values and a strong moral culture.

None of this would have happened if women had never gotten the right to vote.

And of course, the American public had no real relationship with any of them other than their music.

We knew NOTHING about Jimi, Syd, Bonham or Janis other than the ocassional fawning article and we we could divine from the liner notes. There really was no way to get that info like there is today with the internet and immediate access. That's all I meant. I didn't mean we didn't emotionally connect to their art, just that we didn't imagine like we do now in These Salad Days of Celebrity Culture that we are somehow involved in the lives of our entertainers.

And the cause and effect nonsensery of the following is breath-taking in it's foolishness:
quote:

i think that culture/society progresses over time
i'll take 100 honey boo boos if our crime keeps falling at this rate. wouldn't you?
i'll take twice the # of kids sagging if fewer girls keep getting raped. wouldn't you?

Our culture has gone to shite. Family values? They have become a joke. Manners? You now get made fun of for having manners because it's "weak" or "weird"

This. I blame liberals and the wave of hippies who hate their parents and rebel and want to be different.

Why that reaction to the violent crime question? Is low-brow culture not preferable to violence?

I don't have a problem with being different. I have a problem with those who hate tradition for the sake of hating tradition though. I think you can be different on the outside and still embrace traditional values.

things like being more open about sex can be seen in 2 ways:

1. decline of culture and a sign of our doom
2. an opportunity for kids to become more educated about sex and reduce the negative consequences of their behavior

#2 has definitely happened, but people like you are stuck in the mindset of #1

Is there something inherently wrong with these websites?

I think we are losing some of our traditional social skills, yes...but I just think it's adapting and changing with the times.

I'll probably get some disagreement with my opinion but do think it's happening. It's not necessarily for the worse though.

That is not the fault of a website. It is simply a tool. If a child lacks social skills, it is a failure in parenting.

so do we give lots of credit to that parenting for kids not getting pregnant as often as they did in the past?

do we give the parents of a generation ago credit for their kids not killing/raping people as often as before?

Maybe, maybe not. I imagine that shitty parents have been a mainstay of human society since time immemorial.

Eh, I see social media changing the way people interact. It is happening. Online communication is a poor method of communicating feeling and emotion IMO.

People are substituting other interactions with online social media and I think it's inferior. But that is the world of the future and we all may as well embrace it.

I've cut down a lot of my human interactions (face to face) in favor of online communication. It's extremely handy, but inferior to traditional social interactions.
