| Nobel Peace Prize urged for Hillary-- and Bill (Posted on 1/26/13 at 10:04 am)
Like no cabinet secretary before, outgoing Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is being sent off with a huge thank you from the Democratic Party and some of her supporters are even urging the Nobel Peace Prize Committee to give the award to her and her husband Bill Clinton. A new petition on Change.org calls on the committee to present the prize to Hillary for her work around the world for President Obama and Bill Clinton for his post-presidential international involvement. "President and Mrs. Clinton have had a lasting impact upon promoting peace in this world. Both have reached out to the poor and economically deprived nations of this world and emphasized the need for tolerance for women's and minority rights," reads the new petition. LINK

Over the last ten years, the Nobel Organization has strayed away from awarding the peace prize to folks who actually made peace and gotten into things like climate change, economic developement and other feel-good stuff. Mandela, Begin and Arafat may have all been terrorists, but at least by the time they won the Nobel Peace Prize, all of them had actually signed major peace deals.

Also, keep in mind that Bill Clinton blew his chance for a peace prize when he couldn't get Ehud Barak and Yassir Arafat to walk down the aisle in 2000, unlike Jimmy Carter who did get Manechem Begin and Anwar Sadat to jump the broom.

I'm actually a fan of the Clintons (which puts me in hte minority around here). But they don't deserve the Nobel Peace Prize. It should be for actual accomplishments promoting peace between nations, or for standing up to tyranny in a peaceful manner.

This will become part of the DEM nominating process. Now it is just used to detract from a failing DEM fringe element. Hillary shows up as an empty suit at the hearing? Nominate her for the Nobel - that'll take the heat off for a while.

I don't know about Bill, but Hillary for sure. Look at her record. Russia is now our best friend, North Korea and Iran have given up their nuclear plans, Egypt has become a friendly secular democracy, the insurgency in Syria has ended, Al Qaeda has been defeated, Pakistan is our truest ally, Afghanistan has become stabilized, and Benghazi has become an American tourist destination.

Why not. They can join the esteemed company of peace bringers like Obama and Arafat. Fit right in really. Forward.

You might have a point about Obama, but Arafat was just as deserving as Begin.

You know, TF...if Arafat had signed off on that last deal that Begin bent over to offer, I might would agree. Too proud...too greedy; a lot more suffering for reneging. And he stole a ton that should have went to those poor folks whose interest he was supposedly serving and stashed it out of the country. That Prize has become politicized. Worthless really. Hell Marx and Stalin should get one; if their ideology was implemented...voila'...world peace! Forward.

1) You're confused. Begin and Arafat never had any dealings with each other. 2) The idea that Arafat used the Palestinian cause to enrich himself like many other despots in that region is pure fiction. He obviously didn't spend lavishly on clothes. He didn't acrue any posh real estate all over the world, a la Mubarak. At the time of his death, he hadn't taken a vacation in 40 years. Obviously his widow doesn't know of any hidden stash of money, since the Palestinian Authority gives her a monthly living allowance just to survive. Arafat was no doubt a flawed leader, but personal greed wasn't one of them, a virtue he shared with Gamal Nasser, another Arab leader who died a pauper.

Could be, TF. I remember Arafat with all the huggin and backslappin in that Camp David fiasco with Clinton. All for naught. Begin is the one with the thick glasses; seems I do recall it being a little grey head dude. Whatever. Arafat reneged. And I though I recalled him having a ton of buck in Europe. You seem to know. Whatever. Jews and Arabs...Hatfields and McCoy...Tutsies and Hutus...Commies and Capitalists. Forward.

Begin signed a peace deal with Anwar Sadat in 1978. Yitzhak Rabin signed a peace deal with Arafat in 1993, over the strong objections of Netanyahu and the Likud party. Rabin signed a peace deal with King Hussein in 1994. Clinton tried to get Ehud Barak and Arafat to sign a peace deal in 2000, but Arafat didn't feel that Barak's offer was fair, which is a subject of neverending debate. I personally don't think that the two sides can reach a deal by themselves, because any Israeli leader who offers the Palestinians a deal that they feel is acceptable will meet the same fate as Rabin and any Palestinian leader who offers the Israelis a deal that they feel is acceptable will meet the same fate as Sadat. However, if a deal is imposed on them, neither leader can be accused by his own people of selling them out.

Good point. Problem is, who can impose a solution from outside? I can't think of anyone who would be viewed by both sides as an honest broker. You also have the problem that the both sides have violent, radical elements who can exert veto power over any solution.
