You say that like it's a bad thing. If any movie should be a studio film, it's Star Wars. I don't want a "risky" Star Wars. I want a mass entertainment that is made by professionals and tells a compelling story.
This is a recipe for disaster

JJ is the modern day Guligan's Island. His charecters will never get off the island or out of the trouble. He knows to never answer the questions to the cool stuff because then you will stop watching. He/It's one big tease.
The good thing is that the writer of the new Star Wars, Michael Arndt, will not tease.
quote:
At these talks, Arndt always tells attendees that Star Wars’ enduring appeal has to do with resolving its protagonists goals’ nearly simultaneously, at the climax of the movie. In the comments section of a discussion about a Star Wars talk Arndt gave at the Austin Film Festival in 2010, one attendee of the seminar notes, "Arndt stated that if a writer could resolve the story's arcs (internal, external, philosophical) immediately after the Moment of Despair at the climax, he or she would deliver the Insanely Great Ending and put the audience in a euphoric state. The faster it could happen, the better. By [Arndt’s] reckoning, George Lucas hit those three marks at the climax of Star Wars within a space of 22 seconds." Indeed, in the third act of Star Wars, as Arndt explained to his young screenwriting Padawans at the 2009 Hawaii Writers Conference, its central characters' main goals all are met on pages 89 through 91 of the original Lucas script: At the crescendo of Star Wars, a spectral Obi Wan urges, “Use the Force, Luke,” and he does, thus reaching his inner goal (fighting self-doubt to become a hero). Han Solo reappears (meeting the philosophical goal of overcoming selfishness with altruism) to shoot down Darth Vader, which allows Luke to use the Force to mentally guide his shot and blow up the Death Star (outer goal and inner goals simultaneously met)

Your right, I should have been more specific. The polar bear was conviently answered IMO because it deflected from the larger mystery or plot line of it's initial appearance, Walt's powers. Which faded away and of course never got answered. It was pretty obvious that polar bears were not going to be a featured aspect of the story at first but when the show couldnt do anything with the "Walt's Powers" plot they explained polar bears instead.

The title of the thread isn't "Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse WILL direct next Star Wars movie" so I'm not sure what your post has to do with the subject at hand.

I'm no Star Wars junky but I don't think Abrams is all that great of a choice, not a big fan of his. Who would be more fitting for this project? Not sure. I think Ridley Scott would make a good Star Wars.

Lets face it. Today's audience wants fast action and even faster quips among the main characters. Character development has to happen through witty dialouge and not plot. Star Trek (the reboot) is perfect for today's audiences. We learn about all of the characters' idiosyncrasies through how they respond to fast action and faster conversations among themselves. Star Wars will be fine as long as the story is good. In fact, if it is to be a trilogy, then unanswered questions will come in handy. It will also create a new type of Star Wars character.

Good point. Sad but true.

I think these movies are high risk but bring a high reward. Abrams runs the risk of getting it wrong and completely screwing up the reboot. However, because it is Star Wars the movie will sell itself. Financially speaking, I highly doubt the movie will fail at the box office. Even with a large amount of critic backlash.

I read a rumor that they are considering a female as the lead protagonist. Please, God, no. Not another Sci-Fi property that's going to go all grrrl-power.

Confirmation that Abrams isn't abadoning Star Trek and Mission Impossible due to the Star Wars committment. LINK

I just read a quote by him that said he didn't want any part of the new Star Wars movies because he was too big of a fan and didn't want to be involved in anything that would further degrade the franchise.
That's exactly the kind of person we need directing this movie

I thought maybe Danny Boyle. Sunshine is incredible sci-fi until the end where the story lost control

Looks like the 2015 release date may have been a negotiating point to get Abrams on.
quote:
Abrams has not committed to that release date, meaning the date could be changed if the development process requires it.

I was thinking about this the other day. The Star Wars films have a lot of symmetry in them. Could we see Luke heavily injured in a fight and become a masked machine like Vader? By having an actor in a suit, it would make up for Hammil not being in the best of shape for fights.
