| Many St Tammany School Required to Keep Classroom Door Locked bc of Shootings (Posted on 1/25/13 at 8:59 pm)
This is just a way to give off a false sense of security. Teachers still let people in when they knock on the door. All a prospective shooter has to do is keep the gun out of sight and it's the same result. It protects students as much as the TSA protects people at the airport. I'm sure it disrupts class too when students need to knock on the door to come back after going to the bathroom or the office.

I think it is a good idea. If the doors are like the ones in my former school, they are thick and fire rated with only a narrow window. It gives you more of a chance than an unsecure door.

Same policy going on in Bossier Parish. It was actually already on the books before the connecticut shooting but has been strictly enforced since then

Were you wanting to recommend a alternative idea?

Campus security? Covington High and a few others already have them.

Sounds as though its a death trap if someone does infiltrate the school.

I went to Salmen from 01-05. I remember have an armed guard starting in 03. I can honestly say 10-20 kids had shotguns in their cars on campus during duck season.

Once the school announces it is on lock down, no one opens a door for any reason unless it is the police/ swat team. I like the idea.

Yes, the first classroom. But perhaps the teacher, after hearing gunshots down the hall, would be inclined not to open the door for a stranger. RE: CHS and Salmen, I believe every high school in St. Tammany has had a 'resource officer' on campus for several years. I know the one at CHS in Covington PD; Mandeville High is Mandeville PD.

The school district in which I work employs a police force, yet you rarely see them at the actual school building. A locked door is just another safety measure, but neither are going to eliminate an immediate threat.
