| We're starting to look more and more like a 3-4 defense (Posted on 12/8/12 at 9:29 am)
I'll preface this by saying I was always the first to defend against the multitude of "let's switch to the 34" threads we have seen over the past couple of years. However, with the injection of actual production at the LB spot and other additions, I can't really find a reason why not to. I was pretty skeptical at first, but look at this setup: Smith/Galette Bunkley/Hicks Jordan Wilson Hawthorne Lofton Vilma Robinson Harper Jenkins Greer Jordan is more suited for the 3-4 and Wilson is the prototypical 3-4 OLB rusher. not to mention you can let at least 2/3 of Hawthorne Vilma or Lofton play their natural position at a time and you can have Shanle, chamberlain (when healthy), and Cassillas of the bench. That would still allow you to drop Harper into a LB spot in place of Vilma and bring in say IAQ as another FS as Spags likes to do. I'm still not opposed to switching back and forth to the 43 situationally, but to me the numbers show we could the most productivity on the field in the 34 in our base defense. Thoughts?

Spags is good at confusing offenses and creating cool situational packages. I dont mind him switching back and forth but i dont think we should sell out for either.

Cuz it's not in Spags scheme cept as a change up for specialty packages? He's never done 3-4 as more than a package before. We may have some personnel that would fit but if it isn't the DCs scheme then you are advocating bringing in a new DC. Most coaches come from a particular coaching tree. Spags is from Jim Johnson in philly. His scheme is a culmination of his career experience. That isn't gonna change. Like ya wouldn't bring in Gregg Williams if ya didn't want a lot of man coverage and the most blitzing in the league. That is just who he is as a coach.

FWIW, Martez Wilson did play in a 3-4 in college...but he played inside linebacker.

The interesting thing about that is this: If he moves back to ILB in our 3-4, we can bring in a first round pick to play OLB and immediately upgrade the amount of defensive team speed. After reading THRILLHO's cap space thread, I'm liking this option more and more.

I didn't know he played ILB, I thought he was outside. I agree though, Martez and Lofton on the inside would be a good combo.

I'm sure he could play outside, he's a fantastic athlete. I just thought it was an interesting note. He's a big, thick athlete. Looks like an inside guy, but he runs like a safety.
