Sean got to see what it's like to be a fan & not a coach. It's a lot different when you can see the forest from the trees. In other words when you're not in the middle of the chaos, your vision is not clouded. So, I think what was supposed to hinder us, might actually be a blessing. With the line up we have now, a 3-4 just makes sense. All we need now is a Mingo!

My guess: The anonymous source, who called Spags out as being a total dick was, was absolutely spot on and the rest of the defense told Payton the same. Payton saw that it wasn't going to work out as the guys probably didn't respect Spags, nor did Spags respect the players... That's no way for a team to coexist, so Spags got the boot.

To the OP, yes.
Having Spags on the sideline the year after he was a HC, and our HC wasn't there to oversee his first-year's defense play-calling decisions, have a huge part in CSP's move to change DC leader. An ex-HC without a HC run amok.

I've been thinking about this a lot. Of course last years performance had something to do with the decision, but there had to be some friction between Spags and others on the staff.

The switch to the 3-4 will help this offense get over the issues they've had against the 3-4. That, imo, is what is really standing in the way between us and another Championship. Of course the defense has to be play better, but we had to be able to run and not be a turnover machine against the 3-4.

Payton was contemplating the switch for a while now. Spags defense helped make the decision a reality. I'm happy because this may be the huge push this team needs to get past years of mediocrity on the defensive side of the ball. This decision right here may be the culmination of future championships under this regime. Payton just made a huge move to get this team back where we all know it should be. On top.

I think the switch to the 3-4 was inevitable. This is a copy cat, cyclical league. Something's only a fad in the NFL until it sticks, and the shift to the 3-4 appears to be in full swing.

No one is arguing that the defense was anything short of an embarassment bcs they were for the most part of the year. The stats prove that.

However, SP is a classy guy and always has been. Switching to a 3-4 I think is the main reason that Spags is gone, however, it serves a dual purpose of also letting Spags go in a classy manor.

This. When he got here he fired like 7 players the first week and started looking for some new personnel. Spags apparently wasnt the right fit here and Payton kicked him to the curb.

Im sure the guy has been watching film everyday since he got suspended. He saw another direction to go in, and he went.

CSP aint nothin to frick wit

it's funny b/c the 3-4 gained momentum like 10 years ago or whatever b/c it was economically useful to implement

rush LBs, 3-4 DEs, and slower/bigger MLBs were not valued highly inthe 4-3 so teams could get them for cheap if they ran the 3-4. even after they were stars, there wasn't a market for them in the 4-3

it's going to swing back at some point, but the rules changes seem to make the 3-4 more preferable right now

I believe Spag's inability to adapt his defense to fit the personnnel he had available is what ultimately led to his firing. He was hard headed-similar to CLM- in that he was forcing his philosophy and not placing the talent we do have in a winnable scheme. Instead, he set them up for failure and wasted a year in the process. That's what bothered CSP the most.

I think this was probably a factor as well.

Can you imagine SP's thoughts while watching the team this past season??

Totally agree...I think away from the limelight, he could get a different perspective, will pay dividends next season...

This!

To re-establish the alpha role - he had to make an example out of him - and rightfully so...

When I wrote a few months ago that Spags had to go, I got jumped on like a kid with a pair of Lebron shoes. Payton saw what everyone else saw: A defense that didn't improve from start to finish. A defense that looked confused in executing basic skills. A defense that looked as unprepared as a crackhead taking a mensa test; these are the reasons the man got his walking papers.

Saints fans need to be thankful that Payton had the gonads to step in and put the dog to sleep in quick fashion.
