| 2 part Mett question.... (Posted on 1/24/13 at 7:05 pm)
1st Part Question , Mett vowed that he would work harder than he ever had for next season, Does anyone know how that is going ? 2nd Part Question, I will defer to the younger Ranters on this question : Can Mett improve his running/scrambling ability in one off season through advanced performance training, trainer nutrition knowledge and modern technology.. I am now in my mid 50's, I started playing football in the 3rd grade at Istrouma in BR, then High school football and I was going to try to walk on LSU until a life threating motorcycle accident.. After a couple of years of PT, I was able to finish LSU and then moved to Texas where I played 2 years Semi-Pro until a neck injury that need surgery. The reason for my Bio is because in High School we only had a Universal Gym and assorted dumbells. When I started Semi Pro we used Nautilus equipment and free weights. Now I strength train 3-4 times a week and I am afraid my only other conditioning is walking 9 holes with my golf bag. With companies like Velocity and others claiming that they can help shave times off a person 40 times, could this be done with Mett ? I know that LSu has one of the best training staffs in college football and I know they are very capable. I am really interested if this is being tried or could be done for Mett. I really like the guy and I hope the very best for him next year. Thoughts on this ?

Seriously doubt it. I do not think that he possesses the physical attributes needed to improve his foot speed and overall mobility outside the pocket. Hopefully he can greatly improve his throwing accuracy, complete more passes and successfully hand the ball off to our stable of RB's and let them do the rest.

yes, those speed training guys can shave time off your 40. Partially because they make you more explosive and can improve your top end speed and partially because they teach you how to run a 40 as efficiently as possible - proper stance, crowd the line, first step, drive phase, etc. the first part is on-the-field football applicable. the second part is either to help you get a scholly if you're in high school or get you a better payday if you're getting ready for the draft. with his statement, I just assumed he meant that he wanted to get better at pre-snap and post snap reads, ball placement, greater familiarity with his receivers, run checks, and also speed/strength/agility training.

I seriously doubt it. His reaction time is what is missing. He moves like the Exxon Valdez. His only chance to improve pocket performance is to get rid of the ball. I think LSU is going to have to entertain the idea of a running QB substition for certain downs and situations. Opposing teams are squatting on LSU on running downs pretty effectivley at times.

2nd Part Question,
He's in his early 20's so of course he can increase his speed and agility, and probably to a decent amount. Now will this turn him into RG3? No. Just a faster and more agile Mett, which may or may not be enough. Chances are though that he is already doing this to a limited extent.

Can he improve his speed/scrambling? It couldn't possibly get any worse, but that is the least of his problems he needs work on recognizing the blitz and more importantly he needs to work on his touch when it comes to throwing the deep ball.

I sure hope he's working hard and smart. As far as 40 time, thats not important. The O-line has to improve and give him time, and the receivers have to get open and catch the ball. He also needs to get better footwork, touch on his passes, better pocket presence, and get rid of the ball quickly. All of these things are things that can be fixed and make a world of difference.Hopefully that happens.

he doesnt need speed or escapability. he needs to know how to read a defense and audible out of the stupid plays that tend to get called.

This is my main issue with him. Asking him to become a mobile QB is way too much to ask for at this point and frankly, it isn't in his skill set. But, his presence in the pocket has got to improve from last season.

I have no idea if he is working out like he said he would. But I do know he will never be a scrambler much less a runner. This guy has cement in his cleats. Anyone know what his forty is? Can he work on footwork and learn to slide around inside the pocket yes, and he better learn how to do this or he is totally one dimensional. million dollar arm but the other things need work. But he is capable of being terrific if he gets good protection and if our receivers can get separation this yr.

Whine all u want, but Mett is overated. But like JJ he will play the entire season unless he gets hurt, per. LES.

I, reluctantly, tend to agree. Cement feet, no pocket awareness, marginal accuracy, inability to audible when needed, etc....
