Yea, I eat dog food. Why would you do that to your pet? It's probably not good for their health either. Me being human is irrelevant. Just don't beat the crap out of your dog when you come home to a pile of feces every day. It's not their fault.

Adopt a stray- crate training is waaaay better than 24/7 in a shelter than the gas chamber. He will be eternally thankful for a home, even if you are short of perfect. The fact that your worried says you'll care enough to not do the mutt too wrong, honestly.

That's the main thing.
No offense to anyone, but leaving a dog in a kennel 8+ hours a day (or 16, if it sleeps in there at night) is a cruel life IMO. Imagine spending your entire day/night in a small cage. If you can't be there for it often or you don't have a back yard it can live in, I say don't get it in the first place.

Crate trained dogs think that their crate is their cave. They kinda have it in them to hole up for awhile.
But go a step further and put in a good quality underground fence (Sportdog is the brand I installed -- thicker gauge wire). Can be done in a day by yourself, and a smart dog will learn the boundaries immediately.
And to top it off, your dog can sit in the front yard like a boss.

My dog is in a kennel while I am at work. I'm working on getting her on a bathroom schedule, as a previous poster has mentioned. Once I am confident she won't be having any accidents in the house/chewing up random things around the house, I'll start letting her roam around during the day. I do not lock her in the kennel at night anymore, but she goes into her kennel and sleeps there anyway. She will also go in there when she gets bored or if she gets a little scared about anything.

This. My dog is kennel trained. He is in there anywhere from 8-12 hours.
Bastard sleeps all day and then wants to play when I get home ready to pass out from work. His kennel is also the largest one available, way too big for his breed but it gives him a little more freedom. He's outside when it's not too cold or not too hot.

What kind of dog you wanting to get?
It really should be fine with you gone for that time. Just be prepared for a while to be cleaning shit/piss sometimes. When they are little they simply can't hold it long.
Dogs by nature though don't want to lay in their own piss and shite. If you get a small enough kennel to where they can't mess and move away from it, they will more easily become crate trained.

I don't understand why people stick older dogs in kennels all day. Sometimes all night! I can see doing that to a puppy until he is house trained and doesn't chew stuff. Dogs aren't meant to be locked up that long. It's mean.
Maybe I just got lucky with my dog. He never had a kennel. Roams the house and waits til I let him out to use the bathroom.
