That's wrong. Everything I found says it's hockey named after hocquet meaning shepherds crook

I'll just say it, apparently the answer is billiards. Yes, I realize that billiards is played using a stick so that makes sense. But I have no idea where the french interpretation comes into play here.

it doesn't. the french is thrown in just to confuse the people guessing. common in trivia. i would have maybe guessed pool/billiards on like the 8th try. that's a tough one.

well I'll point it out next week then. I was scratching my head wondering WTF billiards had to do with the any french word for stick.

They can't put something on the Internet that isn't true. It's hockey.

so baton rouge isn't translated to red stick?

Sure it is. But the French would presumably have more than one word for "stick".

From this site:

The term "billiard" is derived from French, either from the word "billart", one of the wooden sticks, or "bille", a ball.

I knew that word was baton, but our guess was still way off.

LA's Cajun French is a fair bit different from the language spoken in Paris.

This. In probably most languages, different kinds of sticks would have different, more specific names. The absolute most precise translation of "Baton Rouge" (given the circumstance in which its name was derived) would probably be "red maypole".
