The one time I saw them they got up on stage and said something along the lines of "Everyone says our newer albums suck, and we agree."

Well, they stopped writing songs. I loved them at one time but they became increasingly more and more obscure.

Omar constantly has about 10 side projects at any given time. The guy puts out an ungodly amount of good, interesting, creative music every year. RIP TMV.

I saw them 3 times and it was great every time. I heard a rumor that Omar already had the Mars Volta's next 10 albums already complete. Hope he releases them if thats true.

They announced an indefinite hiattus months ago... but I just checked and you are right. shite has gone down between Omar and Cedric. It makes me kind of sad because this was a band that changed my whole perspective on music.

This already happened. Hopefully they will continue to tour ocassionally.
Honestly, I think this break needed to happen. TMV has been pretty stale since Bedlam, which was a solid effort. Everything after that, like Cedric said, sounds like a different band and half assed. Maybe with a few years apart, something new and fresh will be discovered and they will get back together. A TMV reunion seems WAY more likely than an ATDI reunion ever did.
