re: Beef Stew

No, I've never made a stew with beer. I add a cup of red wine, but not beer. If you have a homemade veal stock there is no way you are topping that depth of flavor.

For chili, I use Abita Amber actually.

re: Beef Stew
Stew is beef, hearty vegetables in brown gravy over rice. I'm no food expert though, which is why Im here asking for advice.

Tommy Patel, thanks alot for the advice on the meat. What is the best type of meat in the list you sent? Best (in my humble opinion) is flavorful and nearly falls apart when it hits your mouth.

re: Beef Stew
1.Chuck Shoulder
2.Round Tip Roast

chuck is cheaper and has descent fat for flavor, Round tip is just so tasty but a bit $ more

and for your 1st stew, go with the beef stock, you can always play(beer) with the recipe next time.

I like my stew hearty the way you are makin it over thick slice of Texas Toast

My mom would serve beef stew* over open faced biscuits. That flavor combo still warms my heart.

*She was an awesome cook, but the beef stew over biscuits was Dinty Moore. Hey, she was a working mom when being one wasn't cool and there were fewer convenience foods. She needed a break from time to time.

my mom could cook well and worked also, but her Beef stroganoff hamburger helper was always quick and yummy.

Dinty Moore from what I remember made a very descent meal on the cheap.

i wasn't trying to bust your balls. i know that some people (usually in the north) consider a stew to be this.

however, where i'm from, a stew is a very "thick" gumbo if you will.

Yep, my wife is gonna make it thick and make it in our huge gumbo pot. It wont be soupy.

The ribeyes will give you a shitload of grease. I made rice n gravy with them once and it turned out mostly grease with a little brown. Some lean beef would work good. You just have to cook it long enough to tenderize.

re: Beef Stew
Potatoes includes one sweet potato. Get the meat tender first so the vegetables want turn to mush.

re: Beef Stew
Just wanted to give an update on the stew.

The good: Stew had a great consistency. Thick, and the carrots potatoes and turnips were cooked perfectly. The round eye roast was a great choice for the meat. 4 lbs for $18 at Sams seemed like a good deal to me.

The bad: My wife read 2 recipes that said to add cinnamon! So she added what she says was a little cinnamon. I believe it made the stew have a slight sweet flavor, but it could have been the wine. I told her to not put cinnamon again, I like my foods to have cajun or spicy flavor, not sweet.

Overall, I give it a 8.5 out of 10 for her first stew. The next one will be amazing. Sorry for no pics, I dont know how to post them. However, it looked like your typical stew. Thanks for the help.
