| Mexican food in New Orleans (Posted on 1/24/13 at 10:01 am)
Am I missing something or is it fairly subpar? I know there's Paisanos for quick to-go stuff on Claiborne. Then you've got Juan's, Taqueria Corona, Felipe's, El Gato Negro, Carretta's Grill. I ate at Panchita's uptown on one occasion and it was decent. Out of those I probably eat at Juan's and Felipe's the most out of sheer convenience for pick up. But for a sit down Lunch or dinner, the only real options are Taqueria Corona and Carretta's, neither of which are anything special. I'm not counting Cucos, Casa Garcia, Superior or Velvet Cactus.

I like Chilangos in Kenner, as well as the Chilangos seafood spinoff.

New Orleans is definitely lacking when it comes to good mexican food. I've yet to find a place that knocks my socks off.

Why don't you count El Gato Negro here? It's not great, and it's a little too expensive I think, but it's better than those two. Although, I like Taqueria Corona (not a fan of Carretta's). ETA, In general, I'm on board with your premise.

Taqueria DF is a few trucks around town and very good. I go to the one across from the waste water treatment plant where Claiborn and Jefferson meet. Although it might not be there right now with all the construction. Taqueria Guerrero very good (near Venezia's). Other than that, slim pickings.

Drove by last week and it looked shut down. I agree this is the worst city of its size I've ever been in for Mexican food. I have not found a single place here that I thought was above average. And a lot of the Mex restaurants are down right awful.

This is my go to place for tacos, enchiladas, and pupusas. They have really good soups too. Has anyone seen the taco trailer on Claiborne lately? I never go over there with the construction, but I've been craving it.

Just an oversight. I go to the one in Lakeview, usually just get ceviche and chicken enchiladas.

Juan's is pretty far from traditional Mexican food

I enjoy Casa Garcia. Pretty good Tex-Mex.

You are definitely not missing anything. 90% of it is crap. In addition to the aforementioned, Norma's has some good Latin American food (not necessarily Mexican)

Fiesta Latina in Kenner is good even though it's not strictly Mexican El Gato Negro is terrible There is a place in lakeview that isn't too bad. I liked Panchita's the one time I went. Felipe's is good for that style of restaurant IMO

No. It's subpar. That doesn't mean it's all terrible. There just aren't any really good places.

Just keep in mind it's a dive Taqueria. Don't go expecting some big restaurant with ridiculous fajitas like a El Tempio or the like.

Paisanos is closed. It's a burger and snack type place now.

That one that was across from Vets that closed a few years back was pretty good. Salsas por el Lago gets no love? Pretty legit Mexican food to me.

dont have much to offer on places in nola......but the mexican component of the hispanic population is relatively low. although it increased post katrina. it's more guatemala, nicuragua and honduras.
